PART 9 — THE BATTLE FOR THE HALE LEGACY

I barely slept that night.

My grandfather’s letter remained on the table in front of me.

Every sentence repeated in my mind.

“You are the only person who can stop Alexander.”

But stop him from what?

Taking the company?

Taking the trust?

Or something much bigger?

By sunrise, I was already driving toward my mother’s house.

I needed answers.

Real answers.

Not more secrets.

When I arrived, Eleanor was standing by the window.

She looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy burden for too many years.

“Mom.”

She turned around.

And the moment she saw my face, she knew.

I knew everything.

“You should have told me.”

My voice was calm.

But she looked hurt.

“I wanted to.”

“When?”

“After you were ready.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps deciding when I’m ready.”

“But nobody ever asks me.”

My mother lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she walked toward the table and placed an old photograph in front of me.

It was the same picture I had received.

My mother.

Alexander.

And another man standing behind them.

“Who is the third person?”

I asked.

My mother’s expression changed.

“That is the person who started everything.”

I looked closer.

A man in his fifties.

Serious eyes.

A familiar face.

“Who is he?”

My mother whispered:

“Your great-grandfather.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Walter’s father.”

I stared at her.

“But he died before I was born.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is he important?”

My mother sat down.

“Because before Walter became the head of the Hale family, there was another rule.”

“What rule?”

She looked at me.

“The Hale legacy could only belong to someone who could prove they were worthy.”

I frowned.

“That sounds like a fairy tale.”

“It wasn’t.”

My mother looked away.

“It was a test.”

“A test?”

“Yes.”

“Every generation had to choose between power and responsibility.”

I slowly understood.

“My grandfather chose responsibility.”

She nodded.

“Exactly.”

“And Alexander chose power.”

“Yes.”

My mother took a deep breath.

“That was why Walter removed Alexander from the family trust.”

My eyes widened.

“He removed his own son?”

“He had no choice.”

“What did Alexander do?”

My mother became quiet.

Then she answered:

“He tried to destroy his own family.”

The words felt impossible.

“He forged documents.”

“He manipulated investors.”

“He tried to take control of everything Walter built.”

I thought about Daniel.

The way he smiled.

The way he spoke like he already knew the ending.

“But Daniel…”

My mother nodded.

“Daniel is Alexander’s son.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

The hatred.

The secrets.

The timing.

The attack.

“They’re working together.”

My mother looked at me.

“Yes.”

“And their goal?”

She reached into a drawer and pulled out another document.

“This.”

I opened it.

My eyes widened.

It was a legal agreement.

A transfer document.

But the name written as the beneficiary was not Alexander.

Not Daniel.

Not even me.

It was…

Grant Whitmore.

I looked at my mother in confusion.

“Dad?”

She nodded.

“Your father was never just an investor.”

“What do you mean?”

“Walter chose Grant because he believed he could protect the Hale family.”

I stared at the document.

“But why?”

My mother smiled sadly.

“Because your father was the only person who ever defeated Alexander.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

The same man who betrayed our family.

The same man who destroyed his own marriage.

Was once the person my grandfather trusted most.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

Daniel.

“Olivia.”

My body tensed.

“How did you get my number?”

He ignored the question.

“I know your mother told you things.”

I stayed silent.

“You think you understand the situation now.”

A pause.

“But you don’t.”

My grip tightened on the phone.

“What do you want?”

His voice became colder.

“I want what was taken from my family.”

“And what is that?”

He laughed softly.

“The Hale empire.”

I looked at my mother.

She already knew.

Daniel continued:

“You have forty-eight hours.”

“For what?”

“To decide whether you want to protect your father…”

“Or watch him lose everything.”

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Your father’s biggest secret is about to become public.”

The call ended.

I looked at my mother.

“What secret?”

She didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because I realized…

my father wasn’t just hiding the past.

He was hiding something that could destroy him completely.

And this time…

even my grandfather’s protection might not be enough.
