PART 18 — THE TRUTH WALTER HALE HID FOR YEARS

The address led me far away from the city.

No cameras.

No security.

No signs that anyone important had ever been there.

Just an old house surrounded by trees.

A place where someone could disappear.

A place where someone could hide a lifetime of secrets.

I turned off the engine and stared at the building.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was finally about to meet the man who had controlled my family’s destiny from the shadows.

My grandfather.

Walter Hale.

I walked toward the door.

Before I could knock…

it opened.

And there he was.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair completely white.

But his eyes were the same.

The same eyes that watched me fishing beside the lake when I was eight years old.

“Olivia.”

Hearing my name from his mouth almost broke me.

“Grandfather…”

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he opened his arms.

And I stepped forward.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to demand answers.

But seeing him alive after believing he was gone…

made everything more complicated.

After a few seconds, I stepped back.

“You lied to me.”

His expression became painful.

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Walter looked toward the empty room behind him.

“Because if I stayed alive…”

“The people hunting this family would never stop.”

I frowned.

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“The same people who have been controlling events for years.”

I crossed my arms.

“I need the truth.”

Walter nodded.

“You deserve it.”

He walked to a small table and placed an old file in front of me.

“This contains everything.”

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Names.

And one name appeared again and again.

Victor Reynolds.

I froze.

“Victor?”

Walter nodded.

“He was the beginning of everything.”

I looked confused.

“But I thought Adrian and Alexander were the enemies.”

“They were.”

“But they were not the only ones.”

Walter sat down.

“Victor was the person who understood one thing.”

“What?”

“That people with ambition are easy to control.”

I looked through the documents.

“He manipulated them?”

“Yes.”

“Alexander wanted power.”

“Adrian wanted revenge.”

“Your father wanted to protect what he built.”

“Victor used all three.”

I felt a chill.

“So the real enemy was never one person.”

Walter shook his head.

“The real enemy was greed.”

I thought about everything that happened.

All the betrayal.

All the lies.

All the pain.

Then I found another document.

My name was written on it.

“Why is my name here?”

Walter became silent.

Then he answered:

“Because you were never supposed to inherit money.”

I looked at him.

“Then what was I supposed to inherit?”

He leaned forward.

“The truth.”

I didn’t understand.

“The Hale family spent generations believing power was the most valuable thing.”

“But I learned something.”

“What?”

“Power without honesty destroys everything.”

He pointed at the documents.

“This was never about who owned the company.”

“It was about who had the courage to expose the truth.”

I looked down.

“So you chose me because I would reveal everything?”

Walter nodded.

“Yes.”

“But why not my mother?”

“Because Eleanor was too close to the pain.”

“Why not your father?”

“Because Grant was too close to the guilt.”

I was silent.

Then I asked the question I had carried for weeks.

“Did Dad really betray us?”

Walter looked away.

“No.”

The answer surprised me.

“No?”

“Your father made mistakes.”

“Serious mistakes.”

“But betrayal?”

He shook his head.

“Not in the way you think.”

I felt a small relief.

Then Walter continued.

“But there is something you still don’t know.”

My heart tightened.

“What?”

He opened the final document.

The one hidden beneath all the others.

The paper was old.

The signature was clear.

And the name written at the bottom made my blood freeze.

Because it belonged to…

my mother.

I looked at Walter.

“What did my mother sign?”

His voice became quiet.

“The agreement that started this entire war.”

I stared at the document.

My mother.

The woman who protected me.

The woman who sacrificed everything.

Had signed something that changed all of our lives.

Walter looked at me.

“Olivia…”

“You came here searching for the truth about your family.”

“But you are not ready for the truth about your mother.”

I held the document tighter.

And for the first time…

I was afraid of what I was about to discover.

Because maybe the biggest secret was never my father.

Maybe it was the person who had spent my entire life protecting me.
