PART 5 — THE ENEMY HIDDEN BEHIND THE FAMILY NAME
I stared at the message on my phone.
One sentence.
But it felt heavier than everything I had learned that day.
“Ask your father what really happened the night the company was created.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Dad…”
My father didn’t answer immediately.
He just stared at the screen.
Like he was looking at a ghost from his past.
“Who is Daniel Whitmore?”
My voice was calm, but my heart was racing.
My father looked around the café before speaking.
“Your uncle.”
I frowned.
“But you said he tried to destroy you.”
He nodded.
“He did.”
“Then why is he back now?”
My father took a deep breath.
“Because he never stopped wanting what I had.”
For years, I believed my father’s biggest enemy was himself.
His pride.
His ambition.
His choices.
But now I wondered if there was another person hiding behind everything.
Someone who had been waiting.
Waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
“My grandfather knows about him?”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
“Walter only knew that I had problems with a former business partner.”
“He never knew the entire story.”
I looked at the papers again.
The documents my mother had signed.
The evidence that she knew more than I ever realized.
“Mom knew?”
My father nodded slowly.
“She found out shortly after we got married.”
“Daniel contacted her.”
My heart stopped for a second.
“He contacted Mom?”
“Yes.”
“He tried to convince her that I was a fraud.”
“He told her I would eventually destroy everything.”
I looked at him.
“And she believed him?”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
“She investigated.”
A strange feeling came over me.
That was my mother.
Even when people hurt her…
she searched for the truth.
“She discovered Daniel was the one hiding things.”
My father continued.
“He had manipulated contracts.”
“Changed financial records.”
“Created problems that made it look like I was failing.”
I looked down.
“So Mom saved you again.”
My father closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The word came out quietly.
“She saved me.”
For years, my father had acted like he built everything alone.
But the truth was becoming clearer.
Every important moment of his life had been shaped by someone else’s sacrifice.
My mother.
My grandfather.
And now…
possibly even someone who had tried to destroy him.
“But if Daniel was your enemy,” I asked, “why didn’t you tell everyone?”
My father looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
That answer surprised me.
“You were afraid?”
He nodded.
“I spent my entire life pretending I was powerful.”
“But the truth was…”
He looked at his hands.
“I was terrified that everyone would discover I wasn’t the person they thought I was.”
I stayed silent.
Because that was the first honest thing he had ever told me.
Suddenly, the café door opened.
An older man walked inside.
Tall.
Gray hair.
A confident smile.
My father immediately froze.
I followed his eyes.
And my blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the face.
Not personally.
But from the documents.
The photographs.
The name written on the papers.
Daniel Whitmore.
My father’s brother.
The man who had disappeared eighteen years ago.
He walked toward our table slowly.
“Grant.”
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
But there was something behind his smile.
Something dangerous.
My father stood up.
“What are you doing here?”
Daniel smiled.
“I heard your little performance at the graduation ceremony didn’t go as planned.”
My father’s jaw tightened.
“You were there?”
“Of course.”
Daniel pulled out a chair and sat down without permission.
“I wanted to see the moment when the great Grant Whitmore finally lost everything.”
I felt anger rising inside me.
But Daniel turned toward me.
“And you must be Olivia.”
I didn’t answer.
He smiled.
“You look exactly like Eleanor.”
My father immediately stepped forward.
“Leave her out of this.”
Daniel laughed softly.
“Still protecting your family?”
He leaned back.
“How touching.”
The tension between the two brothers was impossible to ignore.
Two men.
One family.
One buried secret.
And eighteen years of hatred.
Daniel placed a small envelope on the table.
“This belongs to you, Grant.”
My father stared at it.
“What is it?”
Daniel smiled.
“The truth.”
Nobody moved.
My father slowly reached for the envelope.
But before he opened it, Daniel whispered:
“After you read this…”
“You’ll understand that losing your company today was never your biggest problem.”
My father opened the envelope.
His expression changed instantly.
The color disappeared from his face.
I looked at the paper in his hands.
And I saw something that shocked me.
A birth certificate.
But not mine.
Not my father’s.
Someone else’s.
Then Daniel spoke quietly:
“Grant…”
“It’s time Olivia knows who her real family is.”
