PART 14 — THE MISTAKE THAT EXPOSED THE ENEMY

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

For the first time since I met him…

he looked uncertain.

“You think it’s fake?”

His voice was calmer now.

But I could see the change in his eyes.

He was worried.

I placed the document back on the table.

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“And what makes you think that?”

I pointed at the signature.

“Because my father never signs important documents this way.”

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“My father has a specific legal signature for company agreements.”

“He changed it after the first year of building Whitmore Building Supply.”

I looked at the paper.

“This signature belongs to an older version.”

A small silence followed.

Daniel stared at the document.

Then at me.

“You’re lying.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I’m remembering.”

Because there was one thing Daniel didn’t understand.

He only knew my father’s public image.

But I knew the small details.

The details nobody else noticed.

The way he signed birthday cards.

The way he wrote notes.

The way he changed after the company became successful.

Daniel grabbed the paper.

“This proves nothing.”

“Maybe not.”

I looked at him.

“But it proves you didn’t create this document.”

His expression hardened.

“Be careful, Olivia.”

“Threatening me won’t make it true.”

Daniel smiled coldly.

“You sound just like your grandfather.”

I stood up.

“Maybe that’s why he trusted me.”

For a moment, his confidence disappeared.

And I knew I had touched something important.

“You have no idea what Walter Hale was really like.”

Daniel’s voice became darker.

“He destroyed people and called it justice.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

“He protected people and called it responsibility.”

The room became silent.

Daniel walked closer.

“You really believe your family is innocent?”

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was…

I no longer believed anyone was completely innocent.

My father had lied.

My mother had hidden secrets.

My grandfather had manipulated events from the shadows.

But there was one difference.

They were trying to protect something.

Daniel was trying to take something.

Before I could say anything, my phone rang.

It was my father.

I answered immediately.

“Olivia.”

His voice sounded urgent.

“Where are you?”

I hesitated.

“With Daniel.”

There was a long pause.

Then my father whispered:

“Leave.”

My heart tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he knows.”

“Knows what?”

My father’s voice became quieter.

“He knows the document is fake.”

I looked at Daniel.

“How?”

My father continued.

“Because that document was never meant to convince you.”

“It was meant to distract you.”

I froze.

“What do you mean?”

A heavy silence followed.

Then my father said:

“Daniel never wanted you to find out who controlled the company.”

“He wanted you to find out something else.”

“What?”

My father took a breath.

“The real owner of Whitmore Building Supply.”

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me carefully.

My father whispered:

“Olivia…”

“The company was never mine.”

My heart stopped.

“Then whose was it?”

The answer came slowly.

“The company belongs to…”

The call suddenly cut off.

I stared at the phone.

“Dad?”

No response.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then Daniel spoke behind me.

“You should have listened to your father.”

I turned around.

“What did you do?”

He smiled.

“Nothing.”

“But now you finally understand.”

“Your father has been hiding the truth from everyone.”

I stepped closer.

“Who owns the company?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened the door.

Standing outside were two people.

People I never expected to see together.

My father.

And Adrian Cross.

My father looked exhausted.

Adrian looked victorious.

And in that moment, I understood.

They weren’t enemies.

Not anymore.

They were working together.

My entire world stopped.

Because the one person I thought I needed to protect…

was standing beside the person who wanted to destroy my family.

My father looked at me.

“Olivia…”

His voice was full of regret.

“I can explain.”

But before he could say another word…

Adrian smiled.

“Don’t bother, Grant.”

“She deserves to know.”

He looked directly at me.

“The truth is…”

“Your father never built Whitmore Building Supply.”

“He stole it.”

I felt the ground disappear beneath my feet.

Because if Adrian was telling the truth…

then everything I believed about my father…

was a lie.
