PART 20 — THE FINAL TRUTH ABOUT MY MOTHER

I stared at the document for what felt like hours.

My mother’s signature.

Alexander Hale’s signature.

And a date from before I was even born.

A single piece of paper had the power to change everything I believed about my family.

“Grandfather…”

My voice trembled.

“What exactly did my mother agree to?”

Walter didn’t answer immediately.

He looked older than I had ever seen him.

Not physically.

But emotionally.

Like he had carried this secret for decades.

“She agreed to disappear.”

I frowned.

“Disappear?”

“Yes.”

“She agreed that if anything happened to the Hale family…”

“She would take you and leave.”

I looked confused.

“But why?”

Walter looked at me.

“Because Alexander was not only after the inheritance.”

“He was after the next generation.”

A cold feeling ran through me.

“You mean me.”

Walter nodded.

“Yes.”

“He believed you were the key to everything.”

I looked at the document again.

“So Mom made a deal with him to protect me?”

“Yes.”

“But why does it say Dad signed too?”

Walter’s expression changed.

“That is the part nobody knows.”

I waited.

“Grant didn’t sign because he supported Alexander.”

“He signed because he was trying to save Eleanor.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“He knew the danger your mother was in.”

“Then why did they keep it from me?”

Walter looked away.

“Because they were afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Afraid that once you knew the truth…”

“You would become the target.”

I was silent.

For years, I had thought my family hid things because they didn’t trust me.

But maybe…

they hid things because they trusted the world even less.

Then I noticed something at the bottom of the document.

A small handwritten note.

I had almost missed it.

I read it carefully.

“The truth must only be revealed when Olivia is strong enough to choose her own path.”

I looked at Walter.

“Who wrote this?”

His answer was immediate.

“Your mother.”

My heart stopped.

“She wanted me to know?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she tell me herself?”

Walter sighed.

“Because she knew she might not be able to.”

Before I could ask why…

the lights suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

My body froze.

“Grandfather?”

No answer.

Then I heard footsteps outside.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone was approaching.

Walter immediately stood.

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

“Olivia…”

“Get behind me.”

I whispered:

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

The front door opened.

A figure stepped inside.

And then a familiar voice filled the room.

“I’m disappointed, Walter.”

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Victor Reynolds.

The man who had been hiding behind everyone else.

The man who had controlled the war from the shadows.

He smiled.

“I thought you would have learned by now.”

Walter stared at him.

“You should have stayed away.”

Victor laughed softly.

“And let Olivia discover the truth without me?”

He looked at me.

“No.”

“I think she deserves to hear everything.”

My hands tightened.

“What do you want?”

Victor smiled.

“The same thing everyone in this family wanted.”

“Power.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You’re wrong.”

“Everyone else wanted power.”

“My grandfather wanted the truth.”

Victor’s smile faded slightly.

Then he stepped closer.

“You still don’t understand, do you?”

“Your grandfather didn’t choose you because you were special.”

“He chose you because he needed someone innocent enough to continue his plan.”

I looked at Walter.

A small doubt entered my mind.

And Victor noticed.

“Ask him.”

“Ask him why he never told you the complete truth.”

The room became silent.

I looked at my grandfather.

“Is that true?”

Walter didn’t answer.

And once again…

silence became the most painful response.

Victor smiled.

“Everyone in this family has used you, Olivia.”

“Your father.”

“Your mother.”

“Your grandfather.”

“They all had their own reasons.”

My heart hurt.

Because part of me feared he was right.

But then I looked at the old documents.

The sacrifices.

The years of protection.

The pain everyone carried.

Maybe my family wasn’t perfect.

Maybe they made terrible choices.

But they were still fighting something.

Something bigger than themselves.

I looked directly at Victor.

“You’re wrong about one thing.”

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

“I’m not here to continue anyone’s plan.”

“I’m here to end it.”

For the first time…

Victor looked surprised.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

I looked at the screen.

One message.

From my mother.

Only five words:

“Trust no one. Look underneath.”

I looked down at the old table.

Beneath the documents…

there was a hidden compartment.

And inside…

was a second file.

A file with my name on it.

But when I opened it…

the first page revealed something impossible.

My mother had been hiding another truth.

A truth even Walter didn’t know.

And suddenly I understood…

the final battle was not about the Hale legacy.

It was about discovering who I truly was.
