PART 16 — THE TRUTH BEHIND MY IDENTITY

The photograph stayed in my hand.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t think.

My grandfather was alive.

And somehow…

everyone knew except me.

My father.

My mother.

Even Adrian.

The people I trusted most had been carrying this secret while I lived my life believing I knew the truth.

I looked at my father.

“Tell me everything.”

My voice was quiet.

But there was no room left for another lie.

My father closed his eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

“When the danger was gone.”

I shook my head.

“The danger was never gone, Dad.”

“That’s why we’re here.”

He looked broken.

For the first time, I didn’t see the powerful businessman.

I saw a man who had spent years trying to fix something he couldn’t control.

“Three years ago,” he began, “Walter discovered someone was secretly moving against the Hale family.”

“Someone with access.”

“Someone who knew every weakness.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

My father hesitated.

“Someone inside the trust.”

My heart tightened.

“The trust?”

He nodded.

“The one person who could change everything without anyone noticing.”

Adrian crossed his arms.

“And that person almost succeeded.”

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you stop them?”

Adrian smiled slightly.

“Because sometimes the truth only appears when people believe they have already won.”

I hated how much his words sounded like my grandfather.

My father continued.

“Walter realized he couldn’t trust anyone.”

“So he disappeared.”

“Not because he was afraid.”

“Because he was planning.”

I frowned.

“Planning what?”

My father looked at me.

“The final move.”

A strange feeling came over me.

“Why involve me?”

Nobody answered.

And that silence frightened me.

Finally, my father said:

“Because Walter believed you were the only person who could end this.”

I laughed softly.

“Me?”

“I’m not a CEO.”

“I’m not a lawyer.”

“I’m not someone powerful.”

My father shook his head.

“That’s exactly why.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“Everyone else wanted something.”

“Money.”

“Control.”

“Recognition.”

“But you…”

He paused.

“You only wanted the truth.”

The words stayed with me.

Because maybe that was the reason my grandfather chose me.

Not because I was the strongest.

But because I wasn’t trying to win.

I was trying to understand.

Suddenly, Adrian placed a document on the table.

“This is why everything started.”

I looked down.

It was an old birth record.

My name was written at the top.

But something was different.

My surname.

My hands went cold.

“Why does it say Hale?”

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my father.

Then my mother.

Then Adrian.

“What is this?”

My father stepped closer.

“Olivia…”

“Tell me.”

His voice broke.

“Your grandfather changed your records when you were born.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted to protect you.”

“Protect me from who?”

My mother finally spoke.

“From Alexander.”

I stared at her.

“But Alexander disappeared before I was old enough to know him.”

“Yes.”

“But he knew about you.”

I felt a chill.

“Why?”

My mother looked away.

“Because you were the last piece of the Hale inheritance.”

I looked at the document again.

Everything suddenly felt different.

My entire life.

My name.

My family.

My past.

All of it.

“How much of my life is real?”

My voice cracked.

My father looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“All of it.”

“Your memories.”

“Your childhood.”

“Your love for this family.”

“That was real.”

“But the truth about your bloodline…”

He paused.

“That was hidden.”

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.

A message.

From my grandfather.

Only three words.

“Come find me.”

Below it was an address.

A place outside the city.

A place I had never heard of.

My father saw the message.

His face changed.

“No.”

“What?”

“You cannot go there.”

“Why?”

He looked terrified.

“Because that is where Walter disappeared.”

I stared at the address.

The place where my grandfather had been hiding for three years.

The place where the final truth waited.

I picked up my coat.

“I’m going.”

My father grabbed my arm.

“Olivia, listen to me.”

I looked at him.

“Dad…”

“If my grandfather is alive…”

“If he knows the truth…”

“Then I need to hear it from him.”

I pulled away.

Because after a lifetime of secrets…

I was finally ready to meet the man who started it all.

And I had one question waiting for him.

Why did you hide the truth about me?
