PART 19 — THE PROMISE MY MOTHER MADE

I stared at the document in my hands.

My mother’s signature.

The ink was faded.

The paper was old.

But there was no doubt.

It was real.

“Why did she sign this?”

My voice was barely a whisper.

Walter Hale remained silent.

For the first time in my life…

I saw my grandfather struggle to find the right words.

“She signed it because she wanted to save you.”

I looked at him.

“Save me from what?”

Walter looked toward the window.

“From the Hale family.”

Those words shocked me.

“What?”

He sighed.

“Olivia, power does not only corrupt people who seek it.”

“Sometimes it destroys the people who inherit it.”

I looked down at the agreement again.

“What does this document say?”

Walter slowly pushed it toward me.

“Read the first page.”

I unfolded it.

The title immediately caught my attention.

THE HALE PROTECTION AGREEMENT

Below it was my mother’s signature.

And another name.

Alexander Hale.

My blood ran cold.

“Alexander?”

Walter nodded.

“Your mother made a deal with him.”

“But why would she do that?”

“Because at that time, you were still unborn.”

I stopped.

“What does my birth have to do with Alexander?”

Walter’s expression became painful.

“Everything.”

The room felt colder.

“Alexander discovered that you existed before you were born.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“Because he discovered the inheritance plan.”

I stared at him.

“The plan that involved me?”

“Yes.”

Walter continued.

“According to the original Hale family rules, the inheritance would pass to the person with the strongest moral judgment.”

“Not the oldest.”

“Not the most powerful.”

“Not the richest.”

“Someone who could protect the family legacy.”

I understood.

“That person was me.”

Walter nodded.

“Yes.”

“But Alexander wanted it.”

“He believed the inheritance belonged to him.”

I looked at the document.

“So my mother made a deal with him to protect me?”

“Yes.”

“What did she promise?”

Walter became quiet.

Then he answered:

“She promised that you would never know the truth.”

My heart sank.

“All these years…”

“My mother knew?”

“Yes.”

“She carried that secret because she believed ignorance was safer than the truth.”

I looked away.

The pain was overwhelming.

My mother had spent my entire life protecting me.

But she had also hidden my own identity.

“She lied to me.”

Walter nodded sadly.

“Yes.”

“But she lied because she loved you.”

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to be angry.

But I remembered every sacrifice she made.

Every night she stayed awake when I was sick.

Every time she defended me.

Every time she chose me over herself.

Love and betrayal had become impossible to separate.

Then I noticed something strange.

The agreement had another signature.

One I didn’t recognize.

“Who is this?”

Walter looked at the name.

His expression changed.

“That shouldn’t be there.”

“Why?”

“Because that person was never supposed to be involved.”

I looked closer.

The signature belonged to…

Grant Whitmore.

My father.

My heart stopped.

“Dad signed this too?”

Walter nodded slowly.

“But why?”

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was my mother.

I hesitated.

Then answered.

“Mom.”

There was silence.

Then her voice came.

“Olivia…”

“You found it.”

I looked at the document.

“Yes.”

A painful breath came from the other end.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

“Before everything happened.”

I laughed softly.

“Everyone always wanted to tell me later.”

My mother became quiet.

Then she whispered:

“I made that agreement because Alexander threatened your life.”

My entire body froze.

“What?”

“He told me that if I didn’t cooperate…”

“He would make sure you never had a future.”

I gripped the phone.

“Mom…”

“I was pregnant with you.”

“I was terrified.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell Grandpa?”

“Because Alexander had someone inside Walter’s organization.”

“Someone who watched everything.”

“Someone who could hurt us before Walter could stop him.”

I looked at my grandfather.

He lowered his eyes.

He knew.

He had known this pain all along.

Then my mother said something that changed everything.

“Olivia…”

“There was one thing Alexander never knew.”

“What?”

Her voice became softer.

“The agreement was never meant to protect you from Alexander.”

I froze.

“Then what was it for?”

A long pause.

Then my mother whispered:

“It was meant to protect you from the person who would come after him.”

My heart started racing.

“Who?”

My mother’s voice trembled.

“The person who has been controlling this entire war.”

I stood completely still.

“Mom…”

“Who is it?”

Before she answered…

the call disconnected.

I looked at Walter.

He was already standing.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly who she was going to name.

And when he spoke…

his words changed everything.

“Olivia…”

“The person behind all of this…”

“Is someone you have trusted your entire life.”

I felt the blood leave my face.

Because there was only one person left.

The person everyone believed was protecting me.

My mother.

My father.

My family.

But the truth waiting ahead…

was something none of us were prepared to face.
