PART 10 — MY FATHER’S FINAL SECRET
For the first time in my life, I didn’t know who I could trust.
My mother.
My father.
My grandfather’s memories.
Or even myself.
Everyone had been hiding something.
Everyone had a reason.
And somehow, I was the person left standing in the middle of all their secrets.
I looked at my mother.
“What is my father hiding?”
She didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
And that silence told me everything.
“You know.”
My mother closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Then tell me.”
Her expression became painful.
“Olivia, some truths don’t just hurt the person who hears them.”
“They destroy everyone around them.”
I stood up.
“I’m tired of being protected by lies.”
My mother looked at me.
And after a long silence…
she finally nodded.
“Your father made one decision eighteen years ago that changed everything.”
“What decision?”
She walked to a cabinet and pulled out an old box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And a small recording device.
I stared at it.
“What is that?”
“Something your grandfather gave me.”
“Why didn’t you show it to anyone?”
“Because he told me to wait.”
I picked up the device.
“Wait for what?”
My mother looked at me.
“For the day when Olivia Whitmore was ready to hear the truth.”
My hands shook slightly.
I pressed the button.
At first, there was only silence.
Then my grandfather’s voice filled the room.
“Eleanor, if you are listening to this, then things have reached the point I feared.”
I froze.
It was really him.
Older.
Tired.
But still calm.
“Grant is a good man.”
My eyes widened.
A good man?
The same man who betrayed us?
My grandfather continued.
“But good people can become dangerous when they are controlled by fear.”
My mother looked down.
“Grant discovered Alexander’s plan years ago.”
“He knew Alexander wanted to destroy the Hale family.”
“He also knew that exposing him would create a war.”
The recording paused.
Then Walter spoke again.
“So Grant made a choice.”
“He chose silence.”
My heart sank.
Silence.
The same thing that had destroyed our family.
My grandfather continued:
“At first, I understood his decision.”
“He wanted to protect Eleanor.”
“He wanted to protect Olivia.”
“But eventually…”
“Silence became a weapon.”
I looked at my mother.
She had tears in her eyes.
The recording continued.
“Grant began hiding more than Alexander’s crimes.”
“He began hiding his own mistakes.”
“He became afraid that if people discovered the truth, everything he built would disappear.”
I sat down slowly.
Because suddenly, I understood.
My father didn’t become cruel overnight.
He became someone trapped by his own fear.
But fear did not excuse what he did.
The recording continued.
“The final secret is this…”
My entire body went still.
“Grant never truly owned Whitmore Building Supply.”
I looked at my mother.
“What?”
She didn’t speak.
My grandfather’s voice continued.
“The company was created through a partnership between Grant Whitmore and the Hale Family Trust.”
“Grant was given control.”
“But ownership was always protected.”
I felt dizzy.
“So the company…”
My mother whispered:
“Was never completely his.”
I looked back at the recording.
“Then why did he lie?”
My grandfather answered as if he was speaking directly to me.
“Because power changes people.”
“And once someone becomes attached to an identity, they will do anything to protect it.”
The recording ended.
The room was silent.
Then my phone rang.
This time…
it was my father.
I stared at the screen.
After everything I had learned…
I didn’t know if I wanted to answer.
But something inside me told me I had to.
I picked up.
“Dad?”
His voice was different.
Broken.
“Olivia…”
I waited.
“I need you to listen carefully.”
“What happened?”
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
“Daniel is not the only person coming after us.”
My heart tightened.
“What do you mean?”
My father lowered his voice.
“Someone inside the Hale family has been helping him.”
I froze.
“Who?”
My father hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Someone you know.”
I stood up.
“Who?”
His answer came quietly.
And it changed everything.
“Your mother.”
I felt like the entire world stopped.
“No…”
My father continued:
“I didn’t want to believe it either.”
“But the evidence is real.”
I looked at my mother.
She was standing across the room.
Watching me.
And suddenly…
I wondered if the woman who had protected me my entire life…
was the person hiding the biggest secret of all.
