PART 12 — THE MAN WHO STARTED EVERYTHING
I stared at my mother.
Her words felt impossible.
“Your father was not the person who saved me.”
For my entire life, I believed I knew the story.
My father was the struggling businessman.
My mother was the woman who believed in him.
Together, they built a family.
But now…
I realized the story I knew was only a small piece of something much bigger.
“Mom…”
My voice was barely audible.
“Who saved you?”
She looked at the photograph on the table.
The photograph of Alexander Hale.
But she wasn’t looking at him.
She was looking beyond him.
At the memories.
At the past.
“At first, I thought your father was the answer.”
She took a deep breath.
“He was kind.”
“He was ambitious.”
“He made me believe he wanted a simple life.”
I listened carefully.
“But before Grant entered my life…”
“There was someone else.”
My heart started beating faster.
“Who?”
My mother remained silent for a moment.
Then she said:
“Your grandfather’s closest friend.”
I frowned.
“Walter had a friend?”
“Yes.”
“A man named Adrian Cross.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way my mother said it…
told me everything.
“He was the person who helped Walter build his first company.”
“He knew every secret of the Hale family.”
“Every weakness.”
“Every hidden agreement.”
I looked at the photograph again.
“So what happened?”
My mother’s expression darkened.
“Adrian wanted power.”
“More than money.”
“More than success.”
“He wanted control of the Hale legacy.”
I felt a chill.
“Was he working with Alexander?”
My mother nodded.
“Eventually.”
The room became silent.
“Then why did you marry Dad?”
My mother looked at me.
“Because Adrian tried to force me into a choice.”
“What choice?”
“He wanted access to the Hale family through me.”
I froze.
“He wanted you to marry him?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“He wanted me to betray my own family.”
My hands tightened.
“And Dad stopped him?”
My mother looked down.
“Yes.”
“Your father found out what Adrian was planning.”
“He risked everything to protect me.”
I was confused.
“Then why did Dad become the villain?”
My mother’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because saving someone once does not guarantee you will always remain the same person.”
Those words stayed with me.
My father had once been a hero.
But somewhere along the way…
he became someone who hurt the people he promised to protect.
My mother continued.
“Grant helped expose Adrian.”
“Walter trusted him after that.”
“That was why your grandfather invested in his company.”
I finally understood.
My father wasn’t chosen because he was powerful.
He was chosen because, once upon a time, he had done the right thing.
“But Adrian…”
I looked at her.
“What happened to him?”
My mother’s face changed.
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“Shortly before your birth.”
I felt a strange fear.
“Disappeared?”
She nodded.
“Everyone believed he left.”
“But Walter never believed that.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian was too obsessed with power to simply walk away.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Only silence.
Then a man’s voice.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Olivia.”
My entire body froze.
I had never heard that voice before.
But somehow…
I knew exactly who it was.
“Who is this?”
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“You sound just like Eleanor.”
My mother’s face turned pale.
She recognized the voice.
“Adrian…”
The name left her mouth like a warning.
The man continued.
“I’ve waited a long time for this conversation.”
I stood up.
“You’re alive?”
Another laugh.
“Of course I am.”
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Don’t listen to him.”
But Adrian continued.
“Olivia, your grandfather spent years telling you that family was everything.”
“He never told you the truth.”
“What truth?”
His voice became colder.
“That Walter Hale destroyed my life.”
I looked at my mother.
“That’s not true.”
Adrian ignored her.
“He took everything from me.”
“And now…”
A pause.
“I’m going to take everything from him.”
The call ended.
I stood there in silence.
Three enemies.
One family.
And decades of secrets.
But one question remained.
Why had Adrian waited until now to return?
Then I looked at the letter my grandfather left me.
And I remembered his final words.
“If the truth has finally found you…”
Maybe he knew this day would come.
Maybe he knew the past would return.
And maybe…
he knew I would be the only person left who could stop it.
