PART 9: THE TRUTH ABOUT MY REAL IDENTITY
For a long moment, no one moved.
The wind howled across the rooftop, carrying the sound of sirens from the streets below.
My husband stood there as if he had been expecting me all along.
Victor Hale never took his eyes off me.
Neither of them looked nervous.
Neither of them tried to run.
Instead…
they smiled.
“What do you mean?” I demanded.
My husband slowly pushed the black briefcase toward me.
“Open it.”
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“Don't touch it.”
Victor chuckled.
“If we wanted to hurt her, we wouldn't have invited her here.”
Invited.
That word sent a chill through my body.
This had never been a chase.
It had been an invitation.
With trembling hands, I opened the briefcase.
Inside were dozens of documents.
A passport.
A birth certificate.
Old photographs.
And a sealed envelope marked:
CONFIDENTIAL.
I opened it first.
The letter inside was signed by a private investigator.
The first sentence stole the air from my lungs.
“The woman known as Emily Carter was adopted at the age of three.”
I stared at the page.
“No…”
My voice cracked.
“No… that's impossible.”
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
His eyes widened.
“What…?”
I turned to him.
“You knew our parents my whole life. Tell me this isn't true.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“I didn't know.”
My husband folded his arms.
“You spent your entire life believing you were your father's biological daughter.”
He paused.
“You weren't.”
I felt as if the ground had disappeared beneath my feet.
Every childhood memory...
Every family photograph...
Every birthday...
Suddenly, nothing felt real.
Victor Hale finally spoke.
“The man you called your father loved you like his own.”
“But he wasn't your biological father.”
I shook my head.
“Then who is?”
Victor didn't answer.
Instead, he pointed toward the oldest photograph in the briefcase.
I picked it up.
A young woman was holding a little girl.
The little girl looked exactly like me.
Standing beside them…
was Victor.
Twenty-five years younger.
My hands began to shake.
“No…”
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Then he spoke the words I never imagined I would hear.
“I'm your biological father.”
The rooftop fell silent.
I couldn't think.
I couldn't breathe.
Everything inside me collapsed at once.
Before I could even process what he had said…
another voice echoed from behind us.
“Don't believe a single word.”
We all turned.
An elderly man stepped out of the stairwell, holding a thick file in his hands.
He looked directly at Victor.
Then at me.
His eyes filled with sorrow.
“I've spent twenty-three years waiting for this moment.”
He lifted the file.
“Because everything you've just been told… is another lie.”
