PART 12: MY FATHER'S FINAL MESSAGE
The steel door opened with a slow, metallic groan.
A cold draft rushed out from the darkness beyond.
No one spoke.
Richard switched on a flashlight.
“This room has never been opened since your father sealed it,” he whispered.
We stepped inside.
The hidden room looked untouched.
Rows of filing cabinets lined the walls.
Shelves overflowed with old journals, photographs, and locked boxes.
In the center of the room stood a wooden desk.
On it sat an old video camera.
Beside it...
a single envelope.
Across the front, written in my father's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:
"Emily—Open this only when you know your husband has betrayed you."
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
“How could he have known?” I whispered.
Richard looked down.
“Because he knew exactly the kind of man your husband was.”
Inside the envelope was a small key and a handwritten note.
The note read:
"The truth is not inside these papers."
"The truth is inside the recording."
Daniel inserted the old memory card into the video camera.
After a few seconds, the screen flickered to life.
Then...
my father appeared.
He looked older than I remembered.
More tired.
As if he hadn't slept in weeks.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Emily...”
“…then I'm already gone.”
Tears filled my eyes.
His voice was exactly as I remembered.
“I wanted to tell you the truth myself.”
“But I knew they would never let me.”
He paused for a long moment.
Then he said something that made everyone in the room freeze.
“Your husband didn't choose you.”
“I chose him.”
“What?” I gasped.
Daniel stared at the screen in disbelief.
My father continued.
“When he was young, he seemed honest.”
“Hard-working.”
“Loyal.”
“I believed he would protect you after I was gone.”
His eyes filled with regret.
“I was wrong.”
“I discovered too late that he had been working with Victor Hale.”
“I tried to stop the wedding...”
“…but by then, they already knew what I was protecting.”
He reached into his pocket and held up a silver key.
“If they ever find the vault…”
“…don't let them open it.”
“The vault contains the only evidence capable of destroying the entire organization.”
Suddenly, the video began to glitch.
Static filled the screen.
The image distorted.
Then another face briefly appeared.
It wasn't my father's.
It was my husband.
Smiling.
The recording cut off.
The room fell silent.
Richard slowly lowered the camera.
“No…”
He whispered.
“He tampered with the recording.”
Before anyone could react, a loud alarm echoed through the hidden room.
Red emergency lights began flashing.
A computerized voice announced:
“Unauthorized access detected.”
Then came the words that made my blood run cold.
“Vault security disabled.”
Richard's face turned pale.
“He found it…”
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“My husband isn't running anymore…”
“He's already inside the vault.”
