PART 7: THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

We simply stared at the photograph.

Someone had taken it less than a minute ago.

That meant only one thing.

They weren't following us.

They were already here.

Daniel looked around the parking garage, searching every level.

There was no one.

Only the echo of distant footsteps and the hum of fluorescent lights.

“Let's go,” he whispered.

“No.”

Both Daniel and Sophie turned toward me.

“No?”

I shook my head.

“I've spent years running from lies. I'm done running.”

I pulled out my phone and zoomed in on the photo.

Something caught my attention.

In the reflection of a nearby car window…

there was a man wearing a gray baseball cap.

His face was partially hidden.

But Daniel recognized him instantly.

His expression turned white.

“Oh, no…”

“Who is he?”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“His name is Victor Hale.”

“The man who makes problems disappear.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means,” Daniel said quietly, “people who stand in his way usually lose everything… their careers, their families…”

He hesitated.

“…and sometimes, their lives.”

A chill ran through my body.

My husband wasn't just cheating.

He was connected to someone far more dangerous than I had imagined.

Sophie suddenly grabbed my hand.

“We have to get to the hotel before they do.”

“The Grand Lexington?”

She nodded.

“If Victor is meeting your husband tonight, whatever happens in that room could destroy them both.”

Daniel started the car.

During the drive, no one spoke.

The silence felt heavier than words.

When we finally arrived at the Grand Lexington Hotel, the lobby was crowded with business executives attending a private investment gala.

Perfect.

No one would notice three strangers walking through the crowd.

Sophie pointed toward the elevators.

“They're in the penthouse conference suite.”

We stepped inside the elevator.

The doors were just beginning to close…

when a hand suddenly stopped them.

A tall man in a tailored black suit walked in.

He smiled politely.

Too politely.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Carter?”

My heart skipped a beat.

“Yes?”

He reached into his jacket.

For one terrifying second, I thought he was reaching for a weapon.

Instead…

he handed me a sealed envelope.

“No one is supposed to know I gave you this,” he whispered.

Before I could ask another question, the elevator doors opened.

The man walked away without looking back.

I tore open the envelope with shaking hands.

Inside was only one photograph.

A photograph of my wedding day.

At first, it looked completely normal.

Then I noticed the date printed on the back.

It wasn't my wedding date.

It was dated…

three months before I had even met my husband.

Under the date, someone had written six chilling words in black ink:

“You were chosen from the beginning.”

At that moment…

I realized something that shattered everything I believed.

Meeting my husband had never been an accident.

Someone had planned it long before I ever knew his name.
