PART 13: THE VAULT
The words echoed through the hidden room.
“Vault security disabled.”
For a second, none of us moved.
Then Richard shouted.
“We're too late!”
He grabbed the silver key from the desk and ran toward the back wall.
I followed him.
Daniel and Sophie were right behind us.
At first, the wall looked solid.
Then Richard pressed his hand against one of the wooden panels.
A hidden door slid open.
Behind it was a narrow staircase leading deep underground.
The emergency lights continued flashing.
Every few seconds, the computerized voice repeated:
“Vault access in progress.”
We rushed down the stairs.
The air became colder with every step.
Finally, we reached a massive steel vault door.
It was already open.
Someone had beaten us there.
Inside...
the room was empty.
Almost.
The shelves that should have held hundreds of files had been cleared out.
Storage boxes lay broken across the floor.
Documents had been scattered everywhere.
Someone had searched the vault in a hurry.
Then I saw him.
My husband.
Standing in the center of the room.
His back was turned toward us.
He was holding a single black folder.
He slowly looked over his shoulder.
His expression wasn't frightened.
It was relieved.
“I knew you'd come.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Put the folder down.”
My husband smiled.
“Do you even know what's inside?”
“No.”
“But I know it doesn't belong to you.”
He laughed.
“You're wrong.”
“It belongs to the only person who understands its value.”
I looked at the folder.
“What is it?”
My husband held it up.
“The original ledger.”
“The document that connects every shell company, every hidden account, and every person who helped build this empire.”
Daniel took another step.
“Give it to the police.”
My husband shook his head.
“If the police get this…”
“…hundreds of powerful people will fall.”
He paused.
“And they'll make sure none of us survive.”
The room fell silent.
For the first time…
I realized he wasn't afraid of prison.
He was afraid of the people above him.
Victor Hale wasn't the mastermind.
He worked for someone else.
Someone none of us had seen.
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Then—
Bang!
A gunshot echoed through the vault.
I instinctively dropped to the floor.
Someone screamed.
When the emergency lights flickered back on…
my husband was on his knees.
Blood was spreading across his shirt.
The black folder had fallen from his hands.
Standing at the vault entrance…
was Victor Hale.
He lowered the pistol slowly.
Then he looked directly at me.
Without a trace of emotion, he said:
“He served his purpose.”
My husband looked up at him in shock.
“You… promised…”
Victor interrupted him.
“I never make promises.”
He stepped over my husband, picked up the black folder, and smiled.
Then he turned to me.
“You've been searching for the truth.”
He tucked the folder under his arm.
“But the truth has never been inside these files.”
He paused.
“It has always been inside one person.”
He raised the gun...
And pointed it directly at Richard Bennett.
“You're the last witness.”
