PART 11: THE HOUSE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The smoke slowly cleared.

Police officers rushed onto the rooftop, shouting orders.

Paramedics checked everyone for injuries.

But I wasn't listening.

I kept staring at the handwritten note lying in my hand.

“If you want the truth... come to the place where your story really began.”

Richard Bennett looked over my shoulder.

His expression changed instantly.

“I know where this is.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“You do?”

Richard nodded.

“There was only one place your father ever called the beginning.”

“His old house.”

I frowned.

“But that house burned down years ago.”

Richard looked at me.

“That's what everyone was supposed to believe.”

* * *

Three hours later...

We stood outside an abandoned estate on the outskirts of Manhattan.

The property was surrounded by rusted iron gates and overgrown trees.

According to every public record, the house had been destroyed in a fire twenty-two years earlier.

But it was still standing.

Someone had spent years making sure no one came here.

Daniel pushed open the heavy front gate.

It creaked loudly.

The sound echoed through the empty grounds.

As we approached the front door, I noticed something carved into the stone above the entrance.

A single date.

May 14, 1998.

The day I was born.

A chill ran down my spine.

“How is that possible?”

No one answered.

Richard unlocked the front door with an old brass key he had carried for decades.

“I promised your father I would never open this house…”

“…unless you were standing beside me.”

The door slowly swung open.

Dust covered everything.

Furniture remained exactly where it had been left.

It looked as though time had simply stopped.

Then I noticed something on the fireplace.

A framed family photograph.

I walked toward it.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

The little girl in the picture was me.

Standing beside me…

was the man I had always called Dad.

But there was someone else.

A young woman I had never seen before.

She was holding me in her arms.

On the back of the frame, someone had written:

“Our family. At last.”

Richard's voice trembled.

“She wasn't your mother.”

I looked at him.

“Then who was she?”

“She was the woman who risked her life to save yours.”

Before I could ask another question…

Daniel shouted from the library.

“You need to see this!”

We ran into the room.

Behind a bookshelf, Daniel had discovered a hidden steel door.

The electronic keypad was still active.

Its screen suddenly lit up by itself.

Then a mechanical voice echoed through the silent house.

“Identity confirmed.”

A pause.

Then the final words sent a wave of fear through every one of us.

“Welcome home… Emily.”

And with a loud metallic click…

The hidden door slowly began to open.
