PART 10: THE FILE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

No one spoke.

The rooftop was silent except for the sound of the wind.

The elderly man walked toward me, holding the thick file against his chest.

Victor Hale's confident smile disappeared.

For the first time that night...

he looked afraid.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The old man stopped only a few feet away.

“My name is Richard Bennett.”

“I was your father's attorney.”

I frowned.

“My father's?”

He nodded.

“The man who raised you hired me twenty-three years ago.”

“To protect one secret.”

Victor took a step forward.

“Don't listen to him.”

Richard ignored him.

Instead, he handed me the file.

“Your father told me that if anything ever happened to him, I was to give this to you—but only after you discovered the Manhattan Plan.”

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside were dozens of legal documents.

Letters.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Then I found a sealed envelope.

On the front, in my father's handwriting, were the words:

FOR MY DAUGHTER.

Tears filled my eyes as I broke the seal.

The letter began:

“If you're reading this, then I have failed to protect you.”

My vision blurred.

“Everything your husband has done was never about love.”

“It was never about revenge.”

“It was always about one document.”

I looked up.

“What document?”

Richard slowly removed a faded blue folder from the file.

“This.”

He placed it in my hands.

Inside was the original ownership certificate for a private investment company.

I didn't recognize the name.

Then I saw the list of shareholders.

My father.

My mother.

And...

my name.

I stared at it in disbelief.

“My name?”

Richard nodded.

“When your parents died, their shares were legally transferred to you.”

My husband finally spoke.

“That company is worth billions today.”

The words echoed in my head.

Billions.

I had spent years believing we were building our future together.

But all along...

I had been the future he wanted to steal.

Richard looked directly at me.

“Your husband couldn't access the company without your signature.”

“So he married you.”

“He waited.”

“He gained your trust.”

“And when the company reached its highest value...”

Richard's voice hardened.

“He planned to divorce you after transferring everything into his control.”

I slowly turned toward my husband.

Every lie.

Every apology.

Every kiss.

Every promise.

None of it had been real.

He didn't even try to deny it.

Instead...

he smiled.

“You're only hearing half the story.”

Before anyone could react, he pressed a button hidden inside his watch.

A loud explosion echoed through the rooftop.

The lights went out.

Smoke filled the air.

People screamed.

When my vision finally cleared...

My husband...

Victor Hale...

and the blue folder...

were gone.

But lying on the ground where the folder had been...

was a single handwritten note.

It contained only one sentence.

“If you want the truth... come to the place where your story really began.”
