PART 8: THE FILE THEY KILLED TO HIDE
My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped the photograph.
“You were chosen from the beginning.”
I read the words again.
And again.
They didn't make sense.
“How could someone choose me before I even met him?”
Daniel stared at the photo, his face drained of color.
“I've seen that handwriting before.”
My heart pounded.
“Where?”
He hesitated.
“In our father's files.”
I froze.
“Our father?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Before he died, Dad spent months investigating a financial network connected to several powerful investors in Manhattan.”
“He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I should never trust anyone who suddenly became interested in our family.”
I felt sick.
My father's death had been ruled an accident.
But now...
for the first time...
I wondered if it really had been.
Sophie looked terrified.
“This is bigger than I thought.”
Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out another envelope.
“I didn't want to show you this unless I had no choice.”
Inside was a newspaper clipping from six years earlier.
The headline read:
LOCAL ACCOUNTANT DIES IN TRAGIC CAR CRASH.
It was my father.
Folded behind the article was a handwritten note.
Case File 47.
I opened it.
The first page contained a list of bank accounts.
The second page listed shell companies.
The third page...
had my husband's name.
Not as my husband.
As an employee.
An employee of the same organization my father had been investigating years before we ever met.
I could barely breathe.
“He didn't marry me because he loved me…”
I whispered.
“He married me because of my father.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I think Dad found something they couldn't afford to let become public.”
Before anyone could speak, Sophie's phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Then all the color disappeared from her face.
“What happened?” I asked.
“They've moved the meeting.”
“Where?”
“The rooftop.”
“Why?”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Because they know we're in the building.”
At that exact moment, every phone in the hotel received the same emergency alert.
SECURITY NOTICE: PLEASE REMAIN CALM. POLICE HAVE BEEN CALLED TO THE PREMISES.
People began shouting.
Guests rushed toward the exits.
The entire lobby fell into chaos.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“This is our only chance.”
We ran toward the emergency stairwell leading to the roof.
Twenty flights.
No elevator.
No turning back.
When we finally pushed open the rooftop door...
the cold night air hit our faces.
My husband was standing near the edge.
Victor Hale was beside him.
Between them sat a black briefcase.
My husband looked straight at me.
He didn't look surprised.
He smiled.
Then he said the one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“You're right on time... because now you finally get to learn who you really are.”
