PART 8 — THE MAN WHO CREATED THE MONSTER
The name stayed in my mind long after Ethan said it.
Charles Whitmore.
I had heard that name before.
Everyone in New York had.
A legendary investor.
A respected philanthropist.
A man whose donations built hospitals, funded research programs, and changed thousands of lives.
The kind of person newspapers described with words like visionary and honorable.
The kind of person who stood beside powerful people and made them look even more impressive.
Including Andrew Vaughn.
But now, for the first time, I wondered something terrifying.
What if Charles Whitmore wasn’t just the person standing beside Andrew?
What if he was the reason Andrew became who he was?
Ethan noticed my expression.
“You know that name.”
I nodded slowly.
“Everyone does.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“You know him differently.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
Ethan looked away.
“Because Charles Whitmore was one of my father’s closest friends.”
The answer surprised me.
“Your family knew him?”
“More than knew him.”
A pause.
“He was like family.”
That sentence carried more weight than he probably intended.
Because now I understood.
This wasn’t just about Andrew.
This was about powerful people protecting each other.
People who had spent years building trust, connections, and influence.
People who knew exactly how to make problems disappear.
“Why would he help Andrew?” I asked.
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the hospital behind us.
“Because Andrew wasn’t always Andrew Vaughn.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan started walking toward the car.
“Before he became the famous surgeon everyone knows, Andrew was just a talented medical student.”
“And Charles helped him?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Ethan opened the car door.
“By giving him access.”
I got inside.
“Access to what?”
Ethan looked at me.
“People.”
The answer was simple.
But I understood immediately.
Powerful people don’t always create opportunities.
Sometimes they create protection.
They introduce you to the right people.
They make phone calls.
They open doors.
And once you are inside…
You become part of the system.
“Andrew wasn’t special because he was the best,” Ethan said.
“He was special because someone important decided he should be.”
The words made me uncomfortable.
Because I thought about all the times Andrew told me he earned everything.
All the speeches about hard work.
All the stories about sacrifice.
Maybe some of it was true.
But maybe he had never been as independent as he wanted everyone to believe.
“What does Charles gain from protecting him?”
Ethan stared through the windshield.
“That’s what we need to find out.”
The next morning, Carter Tower felt different.
Usually, the building represented success.
Confidence.
Control.
But that day, every hallway felt like a place filled with secrets.
Ethan had called an emergency meeting with his foundation’s legal team.
I sat in the conference room surrounded by documents.
Reports.
Emails.
Financial records.
Evidence of a story much larger than I ever imagined.
A lawyer named Daniel Brooks placed a file on the table.
“We traced the sealed investigation request.”
Ethan looked up.
“And?”
Daniel hesitated.
“It came through a third-party legal firm.”
“Whose firm?”
Daniel looked at me.
Then at Ethan.
“Whitmore Legal Group.”
The room went silent.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Charles Whitmore.
Again.
Ethan leaned back.
“How long has this firm represented the hospital?”
“Twenty years.”
“And the foundation?”
“Fifteen.”
I looked at Ethan.
“That means he had access to everything.”
Ethan nodded.
“Everything.”
Daniel continued.
“There’s more.”
Of course there was.
With Andrew, there was always another layer.
“We found payments.”
“Payments to whom?”
Daniel opened another document.
“Several former hospital employees.”
My eyes moved over the names.
Nurses.
Administrative workers.
Medical assistants.
People connected to Andrew’s previous complaints.
“Were they settlements?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Consulting agreements.”
The words felt wrong.
“Consulting?”
“Yes.”
“But they weren’t consultants.”
“No.”
Daniel looked serious.
“They were witnesses.”
The room became cold.
Because now the pattern was clear.
People complained.
People knew.
Then suddenly…
They received money.
They became silent.
Ethan looked at the documents.
“Charles bought their silence.”
Daniel nodded.
“Most likely.”
I felt sick.
Not because it was surprising.
Because it confirmed something I had feared.
Andrew wasn’t just a man who lost control.
He was a man who had learned that consequences could be avoided.
He had learned it from people who protected him.
People who taught him that money could erase mistakes.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
I looked at Ethan.
He nodded.
“Answer it.”
I pressed the button.
“Hello?”
At first, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
“Ava.”
I froze.
Because I recognized it.
Not from friendship.
From fear.
It was someone I had not heard from in months.
Someone connected to Andrew.
“Who is this?”
A shaky breath.
“It’s me.”
I stood up.
“Who?”
The woman whispered:
“Dr. Andrew Vaughn’s former assistant.”
My heart raced.
“Why are you calling me?”
Her voice trembled.
“Because I know what Andrew did.”
I looked at Ethan.
He immediately started recording the call.
“What did he do?”
The woman was silent for a moment.
Then:
“He didn’t just hurt you.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?”
“He hurt someone before you.”
The room went completely still.
“Who?”
The woman’s voice became quieter.
“A woman named Emily.”
I frowned.
“I don’t know anyone named Emily.”
“You do now.”
A pause.
“She was the first person who tried to expose him.”
I looked at Ethan.
“What happened to her?”
The woman hesitated.
Then she said:
“She disappeared.”
The word echoed in my mind.
Disappeared.
Not left.
Not moved away.
Disappeared.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then how do you know?”
The woman’s voice broke.
“Because I helped cover it up.”
Silence.
I couldn’t breathe.
“You did what?”
“I was scared.”
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone was scared.”
I looked at Ethan.
His expression had become serious.
“Why are you telling us now?”
The woman answered:
“Because Andrew knows you found the files.”
My heart stopped.
“How?”
Another pause.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Because someone inside Carter Tower has been reporting back to him.”
I looked around the conference room.
At the employees.
The executives.
The people walking through the glass walls.
Someone inside Ethan’s company.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
The woman continued:
“And Ava…”
“Yes?”
“You need to leave Carter Tower.”
“Why?”
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because the person helping Andrew isn’t trying to protect him anymore.”
A pause.
“They’re trying to eliminate anyone who can expose him.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Ethan looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because we finally understood.
The enemy wasn’t only outside.
It was already inside.
And somewhere in Carter Tower…
Someone was watching us.
