PART 10 — THE MEMORY THEY ERASED
For several minutes after the call ended, I couldn’t move.
Charles Whitmore’s words kept repeating inside my head.
“Ask Ava what happened seven years ago.”
Seven years.
A number that meant nothing.
And yet somehow…
It meant everything.
I looked at Ethan.
“Why would he say that?”
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Because he knew what I was thinking.
Because he saw the fear in my face.
“Do you remember anything from seven years ago?” he asked.
The question felt strange.
Almost insulting.
Of course I remembered my own life.
But the way he asked it made me hesitate.
“I remember things.”
“What things?”
I looked away.
“My job.”
“My apartment.”
“My friends.”
“My family.”
A pause.
“But nothing that explains this.”
Ethan sat down across from me.
“Try to think.”
I closed my eyes.
And immediately, one memory appeared.
A hospital.
Seven years earlier.
Rain against the windows.
A woman crying.
A man shouting.
I opened my eyes quickly.
Ethan noticed.
“What did you see?”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
But I did.
At least part of me did.
A memory buried so deeply that even thinking about it felt painful.
“I was at a hospital.”
Ethan became still.
“What hospital?”
“I don’t remember.”
That was the strange part.
The memory existed.
But pieces were missing.
Like someone had removed pages from a book.
“I remember walking down a hallway.”
I looked at my hands.
“There was a woman.”
“What woman?”
“I don’t know.”
My voice became quieter.
“She was scared.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“What happened?”
I closed my eyes again.
This time, the memory came stronger.
A door.
A room.
A voice.
Andrew.
My eyes opened.
“No.”
Ethan looked at me.
“What?”
“Andrew was there.”
The room went silent.
“Are you sure?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I think so.”
Ethan stood.
“Why would Andrew be there seven years ago?”
I didn’t know.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because Andrew wasn’t just someone I met.
Someone I fell in love with.
Someone who later became abusive.
Maybe he had known me long before I knew him.
Maybe our entire relationship had started with a lie.
Then Ethan’s computer made a sound.
Another email.
This time from Daniel Brooks.
The subject line was simple.
FOUND: ORIGINAL CASE FILE
Ethan opened it immediately.
The document loaded.
And within seconds, his expression changed.
“What?”
He didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“What is it?”
He turned the screen toward me.
The file contained a case from seven years ago.
A medical investigation.
A patient.
A witness.
A disappearance.
Then I saw the name.
Emily Lawson.
The same woman Andrew’s former assistant had mentioned.
The first person who tried to expose him.
My heart started racing.
“Emily.”
Ethan nodded.
“This is the original case.”
I read the details.
Emily Lawson.
Twenty-eight years old.
Medical researcher.
She had discovered irregularities in patient records connected to Andrew Vaughn.
She planned to report him.
Then…
She disappeared.
But there was something else.
A witness statement.
A witness who had seen Emily before she vanished.
The witness name was hidden.
Only one line remained visible.
Witness: A. Bennett
I stopped breathing.
“That’s me.”
Ethan looked at me.
“Yes.”
“No.”
I stepped away.
“That can’t be me.”
But the evidence was there.
My name.
My initials.
My connection.
Seven years ago, I had seen something.
Something about Andrew.
Something about Emily.
And somehow…
I had forgotten.
“Why don’t I remember?” I whispered.
Ethan didn’t answer.
Because we both knew the possibilities.
Trauma.
Manipulation.
Someone forcing me to forget.
Then another document opened automatically.
A psychological evaluation.
My name was at the top.
Ava Bennett — Memory Suppression Assessment
I felt sick.
“Someone evaluated me?”
Ethan read quickly.
The color disappeared from his face.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“This report says you experienced severe trauma after witnessing an incident.”
“What incident?”
He kept reading.
Then stopped.
“Ava…”
“Tell me.”
His eyes met mine.
“The report says you were advised to avoid recalling the event.”
“By who?”
Silence.
Then he answered:
“Dr. Andrew Vaughn.”
The room became completely still.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
Andrew.
The man who hurt me.
The man who convinced me I was weak.
The man who told me he loved me.
He had been involved from the beginning.
Not just after.
From the beginning.
“He treated me?”
Ethan nodded.
“Apparently.”
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“So he knew.”
“Yes.”
“He knew what happened.”
“Yes.”
“And he knew I could expose him.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
Everything suddenly connected.
The control.
The fear.
The manipulation.
The way Andrew always reacted whenever I questioned him.
He wasn’t just afraid of losing me.
He was afraid of me remembering.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Ethan looked at me.
“Don’t answer.”
But I did.
Because I needed answers.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice.
Weak.
Terrified.
“Ava?”
I froze.
“Who is this?”
A shaky breath.
“It’s Emily.”
My heart stopped.
The room disappeared.
“Emily Lawson?”
“Yes.”
I couldn’t speak.
Because the woman everyone believed was missing…
Was alive.
“Where are you?”
Silence.
Then:
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why?”
Her voice broke.
“Because they’ll find me.”
I looked at Ethan.
He immediately started recording.
“Emily, who?”
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Andrew.”
My heart tightened.
“He knows I’m alive.”
“How?”
Another silence.
Then Emily said:
“Because the person who helped him hide the truth…”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who?”
Her answer came softly.
And it changed everything.
“Your father.”
I froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Your father didn’t disappear seven years ago.”
The world stopped.
“What are you saying?”
Emily’s voice trembled.
“He helped Andrew bury the evidence.”
“No.”
“And when he realized what they were planning…”
Her voice broke.
“He tried to expose them.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Then where is he?”
Silence.
Then Emily whispered:
“That’s the part nobody wants you to remember.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Seven years of missing memories.
A hidden investigation.
A missing woman.
A father who may have been part of the secret.
And a man I once loved who had been watching me from the beginning.
Ethan looked at me.
“Ava…”
I looked at the files spread across the table.
At Andrew’s name.
At Emily’s statement.
At my father’s connection.
For the first time, I understood something.
Andrew Vaughn wasn’t the beginning of the story.
He was only one piece.
The real secret started seven years ago.
And now…
I was finally remembering.
