PART 11 — THE FATHER I THOUGHT I LOST
For seven years, I believed my father was gone.
Not because I had proof.
Not because I had seen the truth.
Because that was the story everyone gave me.
A tragic disappearance.
A man who walked away from his old life.
A father who left behind unanswered questions.
And I accepted it.
Because sometimes the version of the truth people give you is easier to survive than the one hidden underneath.
But now, standing inside Carter Tower with documents spread across the table, I realized something terrifying.
I had never actually known what happened to my father.
I had only known what people wanted me to believe.
“Ava.”
Ethan’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
“Say something.”
I wanted to.
I wanted to explain what I was feeling.
But there were too many emotions fighting inside me.
Anger.
Confusion.
Fear.
And something I hated admitting.
Hope.
Because if Emily was telling the truth…
My father might still be alive.
“Why would he do that?”
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Ethan looked at me.
“Do what?”
“Help Andrew.”
My voice broke slightly.
“My father was the person who taught me to always protect people.”
I looked at the files.
“He was the person who told me that doing the right thing mattered, even when nobody was watching.”
A pause.
“Why would he help someone like Andrew?”
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Because he knew the truth.
Sometimes people aren’t only good or bad.
Sometimes they make choices under pressure.
Sometimes they become part of something they later regret.
But regret doesn’t erase damage.
“We need to find him,” Ethan said.
I looked up.
“You think he’s alive?”
“I think there are too many unanswered questions.”
That was the most honest answer.
And somehow, that gave me strength.
Because for years, I had lived with a closed door.
Now there was finally a chance to open it.
Daniel Brooks arrived thirty minutes later.
The moment he entered the conference room, he knew something had happened.
“What did you find?”
Ethan handed him the documents.
Daniel read quickly.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“From the original case file.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Ava…”
“What?”
He hesitated.
“There’s something you need to know.”
I already knew I wouldn’t like it.
“What?”
Daniel placed another folder on the table.
“We investigated your father’s disappearance years ago.”
My heart tightened.
“You did?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Nobody answered.
That silence was enough.
Because once again, someone had decided what I was allowed to know.
Daniel continued.
“Your father wasn’t reported missing by himself.”
“What does that mean?”
“He was reported missing by someone else.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
“Andrew Vaughn.”
The room became silent.
I felt dizzy.
“Andrew?”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“That’s what we never understood.”
I stared at the documents.
Andrew.
My father.
Emily.
The investigation.
Everything connected.
“How did Andrew know my father?”
Daniel opened another page.
“Your father worked as a financial consultant for several medical organizations.”
My stomach tightened.
“Including hospitals?”
“Yes.”
“And Andrew?”
“Was one of the doctors whose research your father reviewed.”
I closed my eyes.
Seven years ago.
My father wasn’t just a random person who disappeared.
He had been looking into Andrew.
“Did my father find something?”
Daniel nodded.
“We believe so.”
“What?”
He turned the page.
“Financial irregularities.”
Ethan looked serious.
“Money?”
“Not just money.”
Daniel pointed at the documents.
“Patient research funding.”
Hospital donations.
Foundation accounts.
Payments hidden through multiple companies.
My heart sank.
Andrew’s reputation.
His awards.
His charity work.
It was all built around helping people.
But behind it…
Money was moving.
Secrets were being protected.
And my father had discovered it.
“He tried to expose them,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“What happened next?”
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
He disappeared.
Then Daniel said something unexpected.
“But your father left something behind.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“A message.”
My heart started racing.
“Where?”
Daniel opened a small evidence envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Old.
Folded.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My father’s.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
“If anything happens to me, protect Ava from the man she trusts.”
I stopped breathing.
Because I knew.
The man he was talking about.
Andrew.
But there was something else.
Something written beneath the sentence.
A second line.
Almost hidden.
Like my father had added it at the last moment.
I moved the paper closer.
And read:
“But do not trust the man who saves her either.”
My heart froze.
I looked at Ethan.
The room became silent.
Because my father had written this seven years ago.
Before I met Ethan.
Before Ethan knew me.
Before he entered my life.
How could my father have known about him?
Ethan took the paper carefully.
His face became serious.
“This changes everything.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
He stared at the note.
“My name is not mentioned.”
“No.”
“But your father knew someone would come.”
I felt a chill.
“What are you saying?”
Ethan looked at me.
“I’m saying your father wasn’t only hiding information.”
A pause.
“He was preparing you for this moment.”
Before I could answer, Daniel’s phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his face changed.
“What happened?”
He looked at us.
“They found Emily.”
My heart jumped.
“Where?”
Daniel swallowed.
“At a private facility outside the city.”
“Is she safe?”
His silence answered before his words did.
“No.”
I stood immediately.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“She was moved before investigators arrived.”
“Moved by who?”
Daniel opened his phone.
A security image appeared.
A vehicle leaving the facility.
And beside it…
A person standing near the entrance.
I looked closer.
Then my blood ran cold.
Because I recognized him.
The same man from my memories.
The same man who had been beside Andrew seven years ago.
The same man who had helped build his empire.
Charles Whitmore.
But there was one more detail.
A detail that made my entire world collapse.
Charles wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him…
Was my father.
