PART 7 — THE NAME THAT WAS STOLEN
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The document remained on the table between us.
A single name printed at the top.
ETHAN CARTER.
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at the paper.
Then at Ethan again.
Because my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.
The man standing beside me was the person who had spent the entire night trying to expose the truth.
The person who had protected me when I couldn’t protect myself.
The person who had risked his reputation to uncover Andrew’s lies.
And now his name was attached to the one thing that had allowed Andrew Vaughn to continue hurting people.
The sealed investigation.
The buried evidence.
The silence.
“No,” Ethan said quietly.
His voice wasn’t angry.
It was confused.
Almost wounded.
“That’s not possible.”
Rebecca Lawson looked uncomfortable.
“I understand why you feel that way.”
“No.”
Ethan picked up the document.
“This authorization was not approved by me.”
He looked through the pages quickly.
“I have never seen this investigation.”
Rebecca nodded.
“We believe that.”
I looked between them.
“Then why is his name here?”
Nobody answered immediately.
And that silence scared me.
Because sometimes the most dangerous truths are the ones nobody wants to say out loud.
Ethan placed the document back down.
“Who had access to my authorization system?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“Several people.”
“Names.”
His voice changed.
Not louder.
Just more serious.
“Who had access?”
Rebecca took a breath.
“Your executive office.”
I froze.
“Your company?”
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Anyone involved with the foundation or hospital partnerships could have requested documents.”
I looked at the page again.
The signature.
The approval.
The authority.
Someone had not only used Ethan’s name.
They had used his trust.
They had made it look like he supported protecting Andrew.
“Why would someone do that?” I whispered.
Ethan looked at me.
“To protect Andrew.”
“But why?”
He was silent.
Then he answered:
“Because Andrew was more valuable to someone alive and respected than exposed.”
Those words sent a chill through me.
Andrew wasn’t just hiding his own mistakes.
Someone else had been protecting him.
Someone powerful.
Someone who understood how much influence a famous doctor could have.
Rebecca gathered the documents.
“There is something else you need to see.”
I looked at her.
“Another file?”
She nodded.
“Not about Andrew.”
“Then who?”
She looked at Ethan.
“About the person who requested the sealing order.”
The room became quiet again.
Rebecca opened another folder.
Inside were emails.
Messages.
Internal requests.
The first page showed a communication between the hospital administration and an outside representative.
The sender’s name had been partially hidden.
But the signature remained.
I leaned closer.
And my heart stopped.
Because I knew the name.
Victoria Carter.
Ethan’s sister.
I looked at him.
“Victoria?”
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Disappointment.
“No.”
“You know her?”
Ethan looked away.
“Of course I know her.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“Then why would your sister protect Andrew?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
Because maybe he didn’t know.
And somehow, that was worse.
Everyone knew Ethan Carter as a billionaire.
A man who controlled companies.
A man who could buy almost anything.
But standing there, looking at him, I saw something different.
A brother who had just discovered someone in his own family had betrayed him.
Rebecca continued.
“The request to seal the investigation came from a Carter Foundation account.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“When?”
“Eleven months ago.”
The exact same time.
The same period when Andrew’s behavior changed.
The same period when I started becoming afraid.
The same period when Andrew’s public reputation grew stronger.
I looked at Ethan.
“Did your sister know Andrew?”
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Through the foundation.”
A pause.
“Victoria handled several medical partnerships.”
I felt sick.
Because the connections were everywhere.
Andrew.
The hospital.
The foundation.
Ethan’s family.
My life.
All connected.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression immediately changed.
“Who is it?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He simply handed me the phone.
The message was from an unknown number.
Only one sentence.
Stop looking into Andrew Vaughn. You don’t know what you’re uncovering.
My stomach tightened.
“This isn’t a warning,” Ethan said.
I looked at him.
“It’s a threat.”
He nodded.
And for the first time since I met him…
I saw something close to fear in Ethan’s eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for what might happen next.
Because someone was watching.
Someone knew we had found the file.
Someone knew we were asking questions.
Rebecca quickly closed the folders.
“You need to leave.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because if someone can manipulate hospital records, access your foundation systems, and hide investigations…”
She looked at me.
“They know how to make evidence disappear.”
A cold silence followed.
I thought about Andrew.
His smile.
His awards.
His perfect reputation.
Then I thought about the bruises hidden beneath my dress.
The ones nobody saw.
The ones he believed would remain secret forever.
But now I understood something.
Andrew Vaughn was not afraid because I knew the truth.
He was afraid because I was no longer alone.
I had Ethan.
I had evidence.
And I had finally stopped believing Andrew’s version of reality.
We left the archives minutes later.
But as we reached the hospital entrance, Ethan suddenly stopped.
I turned.
“What is it?”
He was staring at his phone.
Another message had arrived.
This time, there was a photograph attached.
A photograph taken from outside the hospital.
A photograph of Ethan and me walking together.
My blood went cold.
Someone had been watching us.
Someone had followed us.
Then a second message appeared.
You should have left the past buried.
Ethan stared at the screen.
And I saw something change in his expression.
Recognition.
“Ethan?”
He didn’t answer.
“Who is it?”
Slowly, he looked at me.
And the words he said made my heart sink.
“I know who sent this.”
I waited.
“Who?”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“The person who knows exactly how Andrew Vaughn became untouchable.”
A pause.
“The person who helped build his empire.”
I held my breath.
“And they’re not trying to protect Andrew anymore.”
Ethan looked toward the dark street outside.
“They’re trying to protect themselves.”
And then he said the name.
The name that connected everything.
The name that made the entire mystery even darker.
“Charles Whitmore.”
I froze.
Because Charles Whitmore wasn’t just anyone.
He was one of the most powerful men in New York.
And he was Andrew Vaughn’s mentor.
The man who taught him everything.
Including how to hide the truth.
