PART 14 — THE SECRET OF MY BLOODLINE
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The words my father had just said remained in the room like a shadow.
“You weren’t chosen by accident.”
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to laugh.
I wanted to tell him he was wrong.
But deep inside, something told me he wasn’t.
Because suddenly, every strange moment from the past year began connecting.
The way Andrew always wanted to know where I was.
The way he reacted whenever I asked questions about his work.
The way he became nervous when I mentioned my father.
The way he always said:
“You don’t need to worry about things you don’t understand.”
At the time, I thought it was arrogance.
Now I realized…
It was fear.
He was afraid of what I might remember.
“What do you mean?” I asked my father.
My voice sounded different.
Colder.
More careful.
“Why me?”
My father looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw the weight of seven years of regret on his face.
“Because of your mother.”
I froze.
“My mother?”
He nodded.
“Your mother was not the person you believed she was.”
The words hurt.
Because my mother had been gone for years.
And I had spent so long protecting the memory I had of her.
“She was involved?”
My father didn’t answer immediately.
“Yes.”
The answer broke something inside me.
“How?”
He walked toward the table and opened another file.
Inside were financial records.
Company names.
Private accounts.
Medical foundations.
I recognized one name immediately.
Vaughn Medical Research Initiative.
Andrew’s name.
But beneath it was another.
Bennett Holdings.
My family.
“This cannot be real.”
My father nodded sadly.
“It is.”
I looked at Ethan.
He was reading the documents carefully.
“What was your mother’s role?”
My father took a deep breath.
“She created the connection between Andrew and Charles.”
“Why?”
“That is the question I spent years trying to answer.”
He looked at me.
“Your mother believed medicine could be controlled.”
I frowned.
“Controlled?”
“She believed whoever controlled medical research controlled the future.”
The idea sounded impossible.
But after everything I had discovered…
Nothing felt impossible anymore.
“She wasn’t interested in helping people?”
My father looked down.
“At first, I think she was.”
A pause.
“But power changes people.”
I felt a painful emptiness.
Because I didn’t know which version of my mother to believe.
The mother who held my hand when I was sick.
The mother who taught me kindness.
Or the woman connected to everything that destroyed my life.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
My father looked at me.
“Because I wanted to protect the last good memory you had of her.”
I almost cried.
“By lying to me?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
“I thought if you never knew, you could live a normal life.”
I shook my head.
“I was never living a normal life.”
My voice became stronger.
“I was living inside a lie.”
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Then Ethan picked up one of the documents.
“There’s something here.”
We all looked at him.
He pointed at a line.
A transfer record.
A payment.
From Bennett Holdings.
To Charles Whitmore.
Seven years ago.
The exact month my father disappeared.
“What is this?”
My father’s face changed.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
And for the first time, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.
“That transfer happened after I disappeared.”
Ethan studied the document.
“Someone continued the operation without you.”
My father nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The room became quiet.
Because that meant something important.
My father wasn’t the mastermind.
He wasn’t the person controlling everything.
He was someone who tried to stop it.
Someone who failed.
Then I noticed another detail.
A name attached to the transaction.
A person who authorized the payment.
I leaned closer.
And my heart stopped.
Victoria Carter.
Ethan’s sister.
Again.
“No…”
Ethan looked at the document.
His expression hardened.
“My sister.”
My father looked confused.
“Carter?”
Ethan nodded.
“Victoria Carter.”
My father went silent.
“You know her?”
“Yes.”
A long pause.
“Why?”
My father stared at the name.
“Because she was the person who helped Charles access your family accounts.”
The room went completely still.
Ethan looked like someone had hit him.
“My sister?”
My father nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No, that’s impossible.”
But this time, he wasn’t saying it because he didn’t believe it.
He was saying it because he didn’t want to.
The same way I felt when I first discovered Andrew’s truth.
Family.
The people you trust most.
The people you believe would never hurt you.
Those were often the people who could hurt you the deepest.
Then my father walked toward the door.
“We need to leave.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because now they know you know.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?”
Before he answered…
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire building went dark.
Ethan immediately moved toward me.
“Stay close.”
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Several people.
My father’s expression changed.
“They found us.”
The door handle moved.
Someone was trying to open it.
I felt my heart racing.
“Who?”
My father looked at me.
And whispered:
“The people who have been protecting Andrew Vaughn all these years.”
The door opened slowly.
A figure stood in the darkness.
Not Andrew.
Not Charles.
Someone else.
Someone we never expected.
A familiar voice spoke.
“Ava.”
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was impossible.
It belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
Someone whose disappearance started everything.
Emily Lawson.
She stepped into the room.
Alive.
Terrified.
And holding a weapon.
Everyone became still.
“Ava,” she whispered.
“You need to listen to me.”
Her eyes moved toward Ethan.
“Because the person you trust the most…”
A pause.
“…is the reason your family was destroyed.”
