PART 9 — THE BROTHER WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The investigator’s words stayed in the air.
“Your brother.”
I stared at him.
Waiting for him to correct himself.
Waiting for him to say he made a mistake.
But he didn’t.
Because there was no mistake.
And that terrified me.
“I don’t have a brother.”
My voice sounded distant.
The investigator looked at me carefully.
“Mrs. Carter…”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You’re wrong.”
He lowered his phone.
“The security team sent the identification based on the footage and records connected to your family.”
“My family doesn’t have another son.”
A silence followed.
Then my father closed his eyes.
And that was the moment I knew.
He knew something.
“Dad?”
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.”
This time, my voice was sharper.
My father looked at me.
And the sadness in his eyes told me everything.
“You knew.”
My heart started racing.
“You knew.”
My father looked down.
“I knew there was a possibility.”
“A possibility?”
I stepped closer.
“You knew I had a brother?”
Nobody spoke.
Then my father whispered:
“Yes.”
The room changed.
Everything changed.
A brother.
A secret.
Another person connected to my family.
Another piece of my life that had been hidden from me.
“Who is he?”
My father looked at the floor.
“His name was Daniel.”
Was.
The word caught my attention.
“What do you mean was?”
My father took a deep breath.
“Your brother was born three years before you.”
I felt dizzy.
Three years.
My entire life.
I had never heard his name.
Never seen a photograph.
Never known he existed.
“What happened to him?”
My father’s eyes filled with pain.
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
I froze.
“That makes no sense.”
My father nodded.
“I know.”
The investigator looked confused.
“Mr. Bennett, if you had another child, why was there no record?”
My father looked at him.
“Because someone removed them.”
The room became silent.
Someone removed them.
Not lost.
Not forgotten.
Removed.
My grandfather’s warning suddenly felt even more terrifying.
Trust nobody in this family.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching my father carefully.
Not surprised.
Almost like she already knew.
“You knew about Daniel.”
It wasn’t a question.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.”
She sighed.
“Yes.”
My anger exploded.
“And you said nothing?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“You think I wanted to carry that secret?”
“You carried it for twenty-five years.”
Her expression hardened.
“You have no idea what happened.”
“Then tell me.”
For the first time that night, Vanessa looked uncertain.
“He wasn’t supposed to survive.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
My father stepped forward.
“Vanessa.”
But she continued.
“Your grandfather made a decision.”
“What decision?”
“He chose you.”
The words made no sense.
“Chose me?”
“Yes.”
“Over my brother?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Your grandfather believed one child could be protected.”
My hands started shaking.
“And he chose me?”
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
My entire childhood.
My entire life.
Was built on someone else losing theirs.
I looked at my father.
“Why?”
His voice cracked.
“Because Daniel knew something.”
“What?”
My father looked at the old letter.
“He knew who was stealing from your grandfather.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Daniel knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
My father swallowed.
“Because he saw it happen.”
“Who did he see?”
My father looked at Vanessa.
Then Michael.
Then me.
“He saw someone from the family meeting with the people who were stealing from the company.”
I felt my heart pounding.
“Who?”
My father didn’t answer.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Your mother.”
The room became silent.
Again.
My mother.
The name that kept appearing.
The person who was supposed to be gone.
The person everyone kept protecting.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“My mother loved us.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“She loved power more.”
I wanted to deny it.
I wanted to scream.
But too many secrets had already been uncovered.
Too many impossible things had become true.
The investigator interrupted.
“Where is Daniel now?”
Nobody answered.
Then Michael slowly stepped forward.
“There is something else.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He reached into his jacket.
And pulled out an old photograph.
My breath stopped.
It showed two children.
A little girl.
And a little boy.
The little girl was me.
The little boy was older.
He was smiling.
On the back of the photograph were words written by my grandfather.
“My two grandchildren. The future of the Carter family.”
I touched the picture.
My hands trembled.
“Where did you get this?”
Michael looked at me.
“Your grandfather gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Before he died.”
I stared at him.
“You had this all this time?”
Michael looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
The betrayal felt endless.
“How many things have you hidden from me?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“Too many.”
Before I could respond…
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone became silent.
I answered.
At first, there was only breathing.
Then a man spoke.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow…
It felt familiar.
“Hello, Allison.”
My heart stopped.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“You don’t remember me.”
I looked at the photograph in my hand.
The boy beside me.
The brother who disappeared.
The man continued:
“But I remember you.”
My entire body went cold.
“Daniel?”
Silence.
Then a quiet answer.
“Yes.”
Tears filled my eyes.
My brother was alive.
After twenty-five years.
The person my family buried in silence…
Was still alive.
“Why are you contacting me now?”
His voice became darker.
“Because you finally found the truth.”
I swallowed.
“What truth?”
A long pause.
Then he said:
“The truth that your grandfather died trying to protect you from our own family.”
I closed my eyes.
“Who killed him?”
Daniel’s answer came softly.
And it changed everything.
“The person who has been standing beside you since the beginning.”
The call ended.
I looked around the room.
At my father.
At Vanessa.
At Michael.
Because once again…
The truth was right in front of me.
But I still didn’t know who I could trust.
And somewhere out there…
My brother, who was supposed to be dead…
Had the answer.
