PART 6 — THE NAME MY GRANDFATHER ERASED
The photograph remained on Michael’s phone.
The wooden box.
The empty interior.
The note written in my grandfather’s handwriting.
“Trust nobody in this family.”
Four words.
Four words that destroyed everything I thought I knew.
I had spent my entire life believing my family was built on loyalty.
My grandfather was the person everyone respected.
My father was the person everyone remembered as a good man.
Vanessa was the sister I grew up with.
Michael was the husband I trusted with my entire heart.
But now…
Every relationship felt like a question.
Every memory felt like something I needed to examine again.
“Show me the picture.”
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Michael handed me the phone.
I stared at the image.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
I had seen those letters hundreds of times.
Birthday cards.
Notes.
Messages he left for me when I was younger.
It was him.
My grandfather wrote that.
But why?
Why would a man who loved his family leave behind a message telling me not to trust them?
The investigator carefully looked at the photograph.
“Can you confirm this is your grandfather’s handwriting?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He looked serious.
“Then we need to assume whoever took the box wanted you to see this.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“This wasn’t hidden.”
He pointed at the image.
“The person who opened the box wanted you to know it was empty.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“So they’re sending me a message.”
“Yes.”
Michael stepped closer.
“They’re trying to scare you.”
I turned toward him.
“Are they?”
The question came out before I could stop it.
Michael froze.
Because he understood.
After everything I had learned tonight…
I no longer knew whether he was protecting me.
Or protecting himself.
“Allison…”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
His face showed pain.
And for a second, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered the recording.
Vanessa saying:
“She still trusts you.”
And Michael answering:
“Good.”
That memory stopped me.
“I need the truth.”
Michael nodded slowly.
“You deserve it.”
“Then start with one thing.”
“What?”
“Did you know Vanessa was going to take the box?”
His silence lasted too long.
That was all I needed.
My chest tightened.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You suspected?”
My voice rose.
“You suspected my sister was stealing something from my house, and you said nothing?”
“I didn’t know what she was planning.”
“But you knew enough to keep watching.”
Michael looked away.
The investigator noticed.
“What else are you hiding, Mr. Carter?”
Michael didn’t answer.
And then something happened.
Something I never expected.
The front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa walked inside.
Alone.
Calm.
Not afraid.
Not running.
She looked at me.
Then at Michael.
Then at the investigator.
And she smiled.
“You finally figured it out.”
My entire body went cold.
“Where is Lucy’s drink?”
Vanessa’s expression changed slightly.
“I told you.”
“You didn’t poison her.”
“Yes.”
“Then what did you put in it?”
Silence.
For the first time…
Vanessa looked nervous.
Just for a second.
“I didn’t know she would drink from that cup.”
The words hit me.
Not a denial.
Not shock.
A confession hidden inside an excuse.
“You knew the cup was there.”
Vanessa looked away.
“I needed access to the cabinet.”
My hands tightened.
“You used my daughter.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
My voice broke.
“You put my child in danger because you wanted a box.”
Vanessa looked at me.
And the coldness in her eyes terrified me.
“It wasn’t about the box.”
Everyone became silent.
“What?”
Vanessa took a step closer.
“Your grandfather knew the box was not the important part.”
“Then what is?”
She looked at Michael.
“The person who opened it.”
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Your grandfather was smarter than everyone thought.”
She looked around the room.
“He knew someone would come looking for the archive.”
The investigator stepped forward.
“Who?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“You.”
I frowned.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather trusted only one person.”
A pause.
“His granddaughter.”
The room went quiet.
I didn’t understand.
“If he trusted me, why hide everything?”
“Because he knew you would never look for it unless you had a reason.”
My blood ran cold.
The birthday party.
Lucy collapsing.
The missing box.
Everything.
“Are you saying…”
Vanessa nodded.
“Your grandfather planned this.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.”
“He knew his enemies would eventually come.”
She stepped closer.
“He knew the only way to expose them was to force the truth into the open.”
The investigator frowned.
“Who are these enemies?”
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at me.
“The people who destroyed your grandfather’s company.”
“Who?”
Vanessa hesitated.
And for the first time…
She looked afraid.
“Your father wasn’t alone.”
The room became silent.
“There were others.”
“Who?”
Vanessa looked at Michael.
And her next words changed everything.
“Ask your husband.”
My heart dropped.
I turned toward Michael.
“No.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Because Michael knows exactly what your grandfather discovered.”
Michael’s face turned pale.
“Vanessa, stop.”
But she continued.
“He knows why your grandfather changed his will.”
“What will?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“The final inheritance.”
I felt confused.
“My grandfather’s inheritance was the company.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“The company was only a distraction.”
“Then what did he leave me?”
Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.
“The evidence.”
A chill moved through me.
“Evidence of what?”
She whispered:
“Who really destroyed your family.”
Before I could ask another question, the lights suddenly went out.
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Then we heard footsteps.
Someone was inside the house.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there.
The investigator reached for his phone.
Michael moved toward me.
But Vanessa didn’t look surprised.
She simply whispered:
“They found us.”
I stared at her.
“Who?”
She looked toward the dark hallway.
And said the one name I never expected to hear.
“Your father.”
