PART 4 — THE HUSBAND WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
The name on the screen remained there.
MICHAEL CARTER.
For a moment, I convinced myself I had read it wrong.
Maybe the camera footage was unclear.
Maybe the investigator had misunderstood.
Maybe there was another Michael Carter.
But then I remembered something.
There was only one person in my life who had been close enough to know about my grandfather’s box.
Only one person who had watched me hide it.
Only one person who knew how much that old wooden box meant to me.
My husband.
Michael.
The man who held my hand while Lucy was lying unconscious in the hospital.
The man who told me we would find out who hurt our daughter.
The man who looked me in the eyes and promised:
“We’re going to get through this together.”
My stomach twisted.
Because suddenly, I didn’t know if those words were comfort…
Or a performance.
“Mrs. Carter?”
The investigator’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
“Are you certain that’s my husband?”
He nodded.
“We confirmed the number registered to him.”
I stared at the screen.
The footage showed Vanessa holding her phone.
The call lasted almost four minutes.
Four minutes.
Long enough to say something important.
Long enough to warn someone.
Long enough to plan.
Michael stood beside me, watching everything.
But he wasn’t supposed to be here.
He was supposed to be at the hospital.
With me.
Unless…
My thoughts stopped.
No.
I didn’t want to believe it.
Not yet.
Because believing Vanessa was capable of betrayal was one thing.
Believing my husband was involved was something else entirely.
Michael was the person I trusted most in the world.
The father of my child.
The man who had seen me at my weakest moments.
The man who knew every secret I had.
Including my grandfather’s final gift.
“Can you play the audio?” I asked.
The investigator looked hesitant.
“The recording is not very clear.”
“Play it.”
A few seconds later, the room filled with static.
Then Vanessa’s voice appeared.
“I found it.”
My blood went cold.
A man’s voice answered.
The quality was poor.
But I knew that voice.
I knew it before the investigator increased the volume.
Michael.
“Are you sure?”
Vanessa replied:
“Yes. The box was exactly where you said it would be.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Where you said it would be.
Those words were impossible to misunderstand.
Michael knew.
He had known where the box was.
The investigator looked at me carefully.
“Mrs. Carter…”
I raised my hand.
Stopping him.
I needed to hear more.
The recording continued.
Michael’s voice:
“Did anyone see you?”
“No.”
“What about Allison?”
“She still trusts you.”
A silence followed.
Then Michael spoke.
“Good.”
That one word broke something inside me.
Good.
Not relief.
Not concern.
Good.
Like my trust was part of the plan.
I stepped backward.
“No…”
Michael looked at me.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
He looked afraid.
“Allison.”
I shook my head.
“Don’t.”
My voice trembled.
“Don’t say my name like you’re surprised.”
“I can explain.”
Those four words.
The words every person says when they have been caught.
I laughed quietly.
But there was no happiness in it.
“Explain what?”
I pointed toward the screen.
“Explain why my sister had a key to my grandfather’s cabinet?”
“Explain why she knew about the box?”
“Explain why she called you after taking it?”
Michael opened his mouth.
But no answer came.
And that silence was the answer.
The investigator stepped between us.
“Mr. Carter, we need to ask you some questions.”
Michael looked at him.
Then back at me.
“Allison, please.”
I looked away.
Because if I looked at him too long, I might remember the good moments.
The years.
The love.
The family we built.
And right now, I couldn’t afford to be blinded by memories.
“I want to know one thing.”
Michael froze.
“What?”
“Did you know what was inside the box?”
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“I…”
He stopped.
And I understood.
“You knew.”
Michael sat down slowly.
“I knew there was something important.”
My hands tightened.
“How?”
He looked exhausted.
“I found documents years ago.”
“What documents?”
“About your grandfather’s company.”
The investigator immediately paid attention.
“What kind of documents?”
Michael looked at the floor.
“Financial records.”
I stared at him.
“Records connected to what?”
He didn’t answer.
And I already knew.
“The missing money.”
Michael looked up.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
For years, everyone believed my grandfather’s company had lost millions because of business mistakes.
But maybe it wasn’t a mistake.
Maybe someone had stolen from him.
And maybe my grandfather discovered it before he died.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Michael’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Protect me?”
“Yes.”
“By lying to me?”
He looked away.
“I didn’t know who to trust.”
I stared at him.
“You trusted Vanessa.”
His silence was enough.
The investigator looked at the footage again.
“There’s something else.”
Everyone turned.
He pointed at the screen.
“After Vanessa called Mr. Carter…”
The footage continued.
Vanessa walked toward the front door.
But before leaving…
She stopped.
She looked directly at the security camera.
And smiled.
A strange, confident smile.
Like she knew exactly what she was doing.
Then she whispered something.
The audio was almost impossible to hear.
The investigator cleaned the recording.
The words became clearer.
And when I heard them…
My entire body froze.
Vanessa said:
“Tell Michael I found the second key.”
I looked at my husband.
“Second key?”
Michael’s face turned pale.
Because he knew exactly what she meant.
“What second key?” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
Then slowly…
He reached into his pocket.
And pulled out an old brass key.
A key I had never seen before.
A key that looked exactly like the one Vanessa had used.
Except this one was older.
And engraved on it were three words:
CARTER FAMILY ARCHIVE.
I stared at the key.
My grandfather’s secrets were not hidden in one place.
The box was only the beginning.
And now I realized something terrifying.
Vanessa wasn’t searching for what my grandfather left behind.
She was searching for what he had hidden.
And Michael…
My own husband…
Had been helping her find it.
