PART 13 — THE HOUSE THAT NEVER BURNED
The video ended.
The screen went black.
But nobody moved.
Because the question remained.
A question that felt heavier than every secret we had uncovered.
Who told me my childhood home burned down?
I looked at my mother.
Because everyone in that room knew the answer.
It was her.
She was the person who had told me.
Fifteen years ago.
The fire.
The ashes.
The house that disappeared.
The place where I believed my childhood memories ended.
But now…
Maybe it never happened.
“Mom.”
My voice was quiet.
Almost afraid.
“Tell me the truth.”
My mother closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“The house didn’t burn down.”
My chest tightened.
I felt the words before I understood them.
“What?”
“It was staged.”
Nobody breathed.
My father looked away.
Even he seemed unable to hear it again.
“You knew?”
I looked at him.
My father slowly nodded.
“I found out years later.”
“And you never told me?”
His face filled with regret.
“I was trying to find proof.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is always trying to find proof.”
I looked around the room.
“While I’m the person living inside the lie.”
Nobody answered.
My mother stepped closer.
“I know you hate me.”
“I don’t even know what I feel anymore.”
That was the truth.
Anger was too simple.
Pain was too small.
What I felt was something much worse.
Confusion.
Because every memory of my childhood now had a question mark attached.
“Why?”
My mother looked at the floor.
“Because your grandfather discovered someone was trying to access the research.”
“The genetic research?”
“Yes.”
“And the house?”
She nodded.
“The original archive was hidden there.”
My heart started racing.
“So the fire…”
“Was not a fire.”
“Then what happened?”
My mother took a deep breath.
“Your grandfather created a plan.”
“A plan?”
“To make everyone believe the archive was destroyed.”
The investigator stepped forward.
“Who helped him?”
My mother looked at my father.
Then at me.
“Your brother.”
Daniel.
Again.
The name that had followed every secret.
“Daniel knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did everyone say he disappeared?”
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he was the first person they tried to remove.”
The room became silent.
“Who?”
She looked toward the door.
Like she was afraid someone could hear.
“The people behind the company.”
The investigator frowned.
“Who are these people?”
My mother shook her head.
“We never knew all of them.”
“But you knew some.”
“Yes.”
“Names.”
A long pause.
Then she said:
“Charles Whitmore.”
Everyone froze.
The same name.
The same person who appeared again and again.
“And?”
My mother looked at Michael.
“Your father’s family.”
Michael’s face turned pale.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
He stepped back.
“No.”
My mother looked at him sadly.
“I’m sorry.”
Michael shook his head.
“I spent my whole life believing my father was a good man.”
My mother replied softly:
“Most dangerous people are.”
The words hurt because they were true.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
From Daniel.
Everyone looked at me.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
“Come alone if you want Ethan alive.”
My heart stopped.
“No.”
Michael immediately reached for my hand.
“You’re not going.”
I looked at him.
“Ethan saved my life.”
“He may be part of this.”
“No.”
The answer surprised everyone.
Because even after everything…
Somewhere inside me, I knew.
Ethan was different.
He was another person being used.
Another person trapped by his family’s secrets.
My father stepped forward.
“You can’t go alone.”
The message came again.
This time with a photograph.
Ethan.
Still unconscious.
A clock visible behind him.
A countdown.
01:59:00
Two hours.
My breathing changed.
“They’re serious.”
The investigator looked at the image.
“We can track the location.”
“No.”
My mother shook her head.
“They expect that.”
“Then what do we do?”
Nobody answered.
Because for once…
Nobody had a plan.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I know where they are.”
Everyone turned.
I stared at her.
“You do?”
She nodded.
“The old Carter property.”
My father looked surprised.
“That place was abandoned.”
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“It was never abandoned.”
My stomach tightened.
“The childhood home.”
“Yes.”
The place everyone thought was gone.
The place that held the original archive.
The place where every secret began.
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“How do you know?”
Her face changed.
“Because I was there the night it disappeared.”
Silence.
“What?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“I saw what happened.”
My voice became cold.
“Then tell me.”
She hesitated.
“I saw your grandfather arguing with someone.”
“Who?”
Her eyes moved toward my mother.
Everyone froze.
“Your mother.”
My heart sank.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Vanessa nodded.
“They were fighting about the archive.”
“What did they say?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your grandfather said he would rather destroy everything than let her give it to them.”
My mother closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.”
I looked at her.
“By burning my home?”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t burn it.”
“Then who did?”
Nobody answered.
Then the lights went out.
Again.
But this time…
We heard something else.
A sound from upstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone turned.
Because nobody had gone upstairs.
The investigator reached for his weapon.
My father whispered:
“We’re not alone.”
A shadow moved across the hallway.
Then a voice spoke.
A voice I knew.
A voice that belonged to someone who should not have been there.
“Looking for the archive?”
Everyone froze.
The person stepped into the light.
And my heart stopped.
Because standing in front of us…
Was Daniel.
My brother.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him was Ethan.
Awake.
Standing.
And holding a gun.
Pointed directly at me.
Daniel looked at me with sadness.
“I’m sorry, Allison.”
My hands went cold.
“Why?”
He looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“Because you were right to trust him.”
A pause.
“But you trusted the wrong Carter.”
I stared at Ethan.
Unable to understand.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“The man standing beside me isn’t Ethan.”
The room went silent.
“What?”
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s the person who destroyed our family.”
My heart stopped.
Because the man I thought was Ethan Carter…
Slowly smiled.
And removed the disguise.
Revealing the face underneath.
