MY DAUGHTER COLLAPSED AT HER BIRTHDAY PARTY

PART 5 — THE FILE MY GRANDFATHER NEVER WANTED FOUND

The brass key sat in Michael’s hand.

A small object.

Barely worth anything to anyone else.

But to me…

It felt heavier than everything in the room combined.

Because it represented something I never wanted to believe.

My husband had secrets.

Not small secrets.

Not harmless mistakes.

Secrets connected to my grandfather.

Secrets connected to Vanessa.

Secrets connected to the reason my daughter almost died.

I stared at Michael.

“Where did you get that?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that hesitation hurt more than any explanation could have.

“Michael.”

My voice became colder.

“Where did you get the key?”

He slowly closed his fingers around it.

“Your grandfather gave it to me.”

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

“My grandfather?”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

Six years.

One year before my grandfather died.

One year before everyone thought his company began falling apart.

One year before I believed our family was normal.

“Why would he give you something like this?”

Michael looked at the key.

“Because he knew something was wrong.”

The investigator immediately stepped closer.

“What kind of wrong?”

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Your grandfather suspected someone inside his company was stealing from him.”

I already knew the answer.

But hearing it from him made it real.

“Who?”

Michael looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The anger started rising.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.”

His expression changed.

“Allison—”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You knew about the documents.”

“You knew about the key.”

“You knew about the box.”

“And you still let me believe everything was normal.”

Michael looked away.

Because he knew I was right.

“I was trying to find the truth.”

I laughed bitterly.

“By working with my sister?”

His face tightened.

“That’s not what happened.”

“Then explain.”

He remained silent.

The investigator looked between us.

“Mr. Carter, you need to start from the beginning.”

Michael sat down.

For the first time since I met him, he looked completely defeated.

“I met your grandfather shortly before his death.”

I frowned.

“You knew him before that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Through business.”

That answer bothered me.

Because Michael had always told me he met my family because of me.

He told me he fell in love with me first.

But now I wondered…

Was that the whole truth?

“Continue,” the investigator said.

Michael took a deep breath.

“Your grandfather hired me to review some financial reports.”

“Why you?”

“Because he didn’t trust anyone inside his company.”

My heart sank.

“Not even Vanessa?”

Michael looked at me.

Especially not Vanessa.

The words shocked me.

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather believed someone close to him was moving money through hidden accounts.”

I thought about Vanessa.

Her confidence.

Her anger.

Her obsession with the box.

Everything started making sense.

“But why didn’t he tell me?”

Michael’s expression softened.

“Because he wanted to protect you.”

I looked away.

Everyone kept saying they wanted to protect me.

But nobody asked what I wanted.

“Nobody protects someone by keeping them in the dark.”

The room became quiet.

Michael nodded.

“You’re right.”

That simple agreement almost hurt more.

Because it meant he knew.

He knew he had failed me.

“What was inside the box?” I asked.

Michael looked at the key.

“I don’t know.”

The investigator frowned.

“You had a key but never opened the archive?”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather specifically told me not to.”

I stared at him.

“What did he say?”

Michael swallowed.

“He told me that if anything happened to him…”

A pause.

“The archive should only be opened when Allison knew the truth.”

My heart stopped.

“When I knew the truth?”

Michael nodded.

“He said you would know when the time came.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

My grandfather knew.

He knew something would happen.

He knew someone would betray us.

And he prepared for it.

The investigator looked at the key.

“Where is this archive?”

Michael hesitated.

“Under the old Carter estate.”

I froze.

The house where my grandfather lived.

The house I had inherited.

The house I hadn’t visited in years.

“Why didn’t Vanessa take the key?”

Michael looked at me.

“Because she doesn’t have the right one.”

“What do you mean?”

“There are two keys.”

He held up the brass key.

“One opens the archive.”

“Then what does the other one do?”

Michael looked at the empty cabinet where the wooden box had been.

“The other key opens the box.”

My stomach tightened.

“And Vanessa has it.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

The investigator immediately turned.

“Then we need to find your sister.”

But before anyone could move, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“Hello?”

At first, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

Calm.

Almost cheerful.

“Hello, Allison.”

My hands tightened around the phone.

“Where is my grandfather’s box?”

A small laugh.

“You always were impatient.”

“Vanessa.”

My voice shook.

“You poisoned Lucy.”

Silence.

Then she replied:

“I didn’t poison Lucy.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“I only needed everyone distracted.”

The room went completely still.

My heart started racing.

“Distracted for what?”

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“To find what your grandfather hid.”

I looked at Michael.

Then the key.

“What is in that box?”

Her voice became quieter.

“The reason your grandfather died afraid.”

A chill moved through me.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

“Know what?”

“The company wasn’t destroyed by bad investments.”

A pause.

“It was destroyed because your grandfather discovered who betrayed him.”

My breathing stopped.

“Who?”

Vanessa answered immediately.

And the name she said changed everything.

“Your father.”

I froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No, Allison.”

Her voice became colder.

“The man you thought was a victim…”

A pause.

“Was the person your grandfather was trying to expose.”

The call ended.

I stood there unable to move.

Because suddenly, I didn’t know what was worse.

The possibility that Vanessa was lying…

Or the possibility that she wasn’t.

Then Michael’s phone received a message.

One image.

A photograph.

The wooden box.

Opened.

Empty.

And underneath it was a note written in my grandfather’s handwriting.

Only four words:

“Trust nobody in this family.”

I looked at Michael.

At the investigator.

At the empty space where the truth had been hidden for years.

Because my grandfather had left behind a warning.

Not a clue.

Not an answer.

A warning.

And now I finally understood.

The birthday party wasn’t an attack on Lucy.

It was an attempt to stop me from discovering what my grandfather knew.

And whoever was behind it…

Was willing to destroy anyone who stood in the way.
