PART 8 — THE TRUTH THAT CHANGED EVERYONE
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because Andrew’s final sentence was impossible to accept.
“The person who started this entire plan was your father, Claire.”
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me to trust.
The man who always told me that family was the most important thing in the world.
The same man whose memory I had protected for years.
I looked at Andrew.
“Explain.”
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Andrew lowered his head.
“I know how it sounds.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I need the truth.”
He took a deep breath.
“The truth is that your father saw something in Julian before any of us did.”
Julian looked confused.
“What?”
Andrew turned toward him.
“He saw your ambition.”
The room became silent.
“He saw your hunger for success.”
“He saw how badly you wanted to prove yourself.”
Julian stared.
“And?”
Andrew continued.
“He believed that if he gave you enough temptation, he would discover who you really were.”
My heart tightened.
“A test?”
Andrew nodded.
“A test.”
The word felt cruel.
My father had turned our lives into an experiment.
A test where my marriage was the price.
My children were the ones who suffered.
Julian looked devastated.
“So your father knew?”
“Yes.”
“He knew Victoria was approaching me?”
“Yes.”
“He knew I was being offered everything I ever wanted?”
“Yes.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“And he did nothing?”
Andrew looked away.
“He thought you would choose Claire.”
Those words hurt more than anything.
Because they meant my father believed love would win.
But it didn’t.
Ambition won.
Fear won.
Pride won.
Julian closed his eyes.
“I failed.”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew it was true.
But there was something else.
Something that still didn’t make sense.
I looked at Andrew.
“If Dad planned all of this…”
“Why did he hide the truth from me?”
Andrew remained silent.
That silence told me there was another secret.
“There’s more.”
Andrew nodded.
“Yes.”
The entire room waited.
“Your father didn’t just test Julian.”
My heart stopped.
“What else did he do?”
Andrew looked at Lucas and Noah.
“He protected them.”
I frowned.
“Protected them from what?”
Andrew reached into his jacket.
He pulled out another envelope.
“This.”
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My father’s.
Again.
Another letter.
Another secret.
I felt exhausted.
How many truths had been hidden from me?
Andrew handed it to me.
I opened it slowly.
The first sentence made my hands tremble.
“Claire, if you are reading this, then you have finally learned what I was afraid to tell you.”
I continued.
“Julian’s greatest mistake was believing he was choosing between love and success.”
A pause.
“The truth is that he was never fighting for success.”
I frowned.
What did that mean?
The next line answered.
“He was fighting against himself.”
I looked at Julian.
He looked just as confused.
The letter continued.
“Victoria’s family did not create Julian’s ambition. They only revealed what was already inside him.”
Silence.
Because that was the truth nobody wanted to accept.
Julian wasn’t only manipulated.
He was also tempted.
And he chose.
My father understood that.
Maybe that was why he did nothing.
Maybe he wanted Julian to reveal himself.
But then the final paragraph appeared.
And everything changed.
“However, Claire, there is one thing Julian never knew.”
I stopped.
My heart raced.
“The night he left, he was not leaving only you.”
I looked at Julian.
“What does that mean?”
Nobody answered.
I read the next sentence.
“He was also leaving behind a secret about his own family.”
My hands froze.
His own family?
Julian looked at me.
“What secret?”
I didn’t know.
But the letter continued.
“Julian’s past was never as simple as he believed.”
The audience watched silently.
Victoria looked frightened.
Andrew looked guilty.
My sons looked confused.
Then the final line appeared.
“Before you forgive Julian, you must discover why he was chosen in the first place.”
The letter ended.
But the questions remained.
Why had my father chosen Julian?
Why had Victoria’s family been interested in him?
Why had Andrew risked everything to control the outcome?
And most importantly…
Who was Julian Whitmore before he became the billionaire everyone knew?
The cameras were still recording.
The world was still watching.
But for the first time…
Julian and I were no longer searching for the truth about our divorce.
We were searching for the truth about his entire life.
Because maybe the biggest secret wasn’t that Julian abandoned his family.
Maybe the biggest secret…
Was that someone had spent decades preparing him for that exact moment.
