PART 7 — THE LETTER MY MOTHER HID FOR THIRTEEN YEARS
The name on the screen remained there.
Eleanor Holloway.
My mother.
A woman who had been gone from our lives for years.
A woman who had always protected me.
A woman who knew more about my marriage than I ever realized.
The auditorium became silent.
Nobody understood what was happening.
Not Julian.
Not Victoria.
Not even me.
I looked at Lucas and Noah.
“How did you find this?”
Noah lowered his eyes.
“We didn’t.”
“Then who did?”
He looked toward the stage.
“The award committee received it anonymously.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Anonymous.
Someone had waited thirteen years for this moment.
Someone had been protecting the truth until the right time.
The host carefully opened the file.
Inside was a letter.
Old.
Folded.
But perfectly preserved.
“Would you like me to read this?” the host asked.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
The entire room needed to hear it.
The host began.
“To my daughter Claire…”
My breath stopped.
The letter was for me.
My mother’s words filled the auditorium.
“If you are hearing this, then the truth I tried to protect can no longer remain hidden.”
I closed my eyes.
Because even before the next sentence came, I felt the pain coming.
“I know you believe Julian left because he stopped loving you.”
Julian looked down.
“But that is not the complete truth.”
The audience became completely still.
My hands tightened.
The host continued.
“Before Julian made his decision, I discovered that someone was trying to control the outcome of his life.”
Everyone looked toward Victoria.
But the letter continued.
“It was not only Victoria Harrington.”
A wave of shock moved through the room.
Julian looked up.
“What?”
The host continued reading.
“There was another person involved. Someone much closer to our family.”
I felt my heart racing.
Closer?
Who could be closer than Victoria?
Then the next line appeared.
And everything changed.
“Someone Julian trusted more than anyone.”
The room became silent.
Julian looked around.
His eyes searched every face.
Then slowly…
They stopped on me.
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
“Claire…”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
But deep inside…
I already feared the answer.
The host continued.
“I wanted to tell you everything. I wanted to stop the marriage from falling apart. But I discovered something that made me afraid.”
A pause.
Then:
“The person behind the plan knew exactly how to destroy everyone involved.”
The audience listened carefully.
The host turned the page.
“They knew Julian’s weakness. They knew Victoria’s ambition. They knew your father’s secrets. And they knew your love for Julian would prevent you from seeing the truth.”
My heart sank.
Because whoever planned everything…
Had studied us.
Had understood us.
Had used our emotions against us.
Julian suddenly spoke.
“Who was it?”
The host looked at the letter.
“The name is written here.”
The entire room waited.
Even Victoria looked nervous.
The host continued.
“The person responsible for pushing Julian away from his family was…”
The paper trembled slightly.
Then the name appeared.
A name nobody expected.
A name that made me step back.
Because it belonged to someone who had been beside me during my darkest days.
Someone who comforted me after Julian left.
Someone who told me they wanted to help me rebuild my life.
The person who had always claimed to be on my side.
My own brother.
Andrew Holloway.
The room exploded.
Julian turned toward me.
“Your brother?”
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly, memories returned.
Andrew telling me not to fight for custody.
Andrew telling me Julian had made his choice.
Andrew encouraging me to disappear from the public eye.
I always thought he was protecting me.
But what if…
He was protecting something else?
Noah looked at me.
“Mom…”
I looked at my sons.
“I didn’t know.”
And for the first time that night…
Julian and I shared the same expression.
Betrayal.
The host continued.
But the next part was even worse.
“Andrew believed he was protecting the family.”
“He believed controlling the situation would prevent greater damage.”
“But he never understood that protecting people through lies creates the same pain as betrayal.”
The doors at the back of the auditorium suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tired.
Carrying years of guilt on his face.
Andrew.
My brother.
The man whose name had just been revealed in front of thousands of people.
He slowly walked forward.
Nobody spoke.
Until Julian finally asked:
“Why?”
Andrew stopped.
His eyes filled with regret.
And after thirteen years of silence…
He finally answered.
“Because I knew what would happen if you stayed.”
Everyone froze.
Andrew looked at Julian.
“You think you lost your family because you chose Victoria.”
He shook his head.
“You were wrong.”
A painful silence followed.
“Someone was preparing to destroy you long before that night.”
Julian stared.
“Who?”
Andrew looked toward the screen.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“The person who started this entire plan…”
A pause.
“The person who knew everything from the beginning…”
He took a deep breath.
“Was your father, Claire.”
