THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN

Julianne's breath caught in her throat.

The face on the security monitor couldn't be real.

For fifteen years...

She had believed her father was dead.

She had stood beside an empty coffin.

She had cried over a grave that contained nothing but stones.

Yet the man standing outside her estate looked exactly the same.

Only older.

His hair was streaked with gray.

A long scar crossed his left cheek.

"Dad..."

she whispered.

The head of security turned toward her.

"Mrs. Henderson?"

Julianne didn't answer.

"Lower your weapons," she ordered.

The guards hesitated.

"But, ma'am—"

"I said lower them."

The gates slowly opened.

The man walked inside.

He stopped a few feet away.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, he smiled sadly.

"You've grown into the woman your mother always hoped you'd become."

Tears filled Julianne's eyes.

"Why?"

"Why did you leave us?"

The man closed his eyes.

"I didn't leave."

"I was taken."

He reached into his coat and carefully placed an old silver pocket watch in her hand.

Julianne gasped.

It was the same watch her father had carried every day of her childhood.

Inside the cover was a tiny engraving.

For Julianne. Love always, Dad.

No one else could have known it existed.

She threw her arms around him.

For the first time in fifteen years...

She hugged her father.

Miles away, Marcus sat alone in his hotel room at O'Hare Airport.

He inserted Eleanor's flash drive into his laptop.

A video file appeared.

The timestamp read:

Recorded 15 years ago.

He pressed play.

A younger version of Julianne's father appeared on the screen.

"If you're watching this,"

he said calmly,

"then I'm probably still missing."

"My name is Richard Lane."

"And someone inside the Henderson family ordered my disappearance."

Marcus froze.

"No..."

Richard continued.

"If Marcus Henderson is with you..."

"...tell him none of this was his fault."

Marcus's eyes widened.

Then Richard spoke the one sentence that changed everything.

"The man who destroyed my family..."

"...wasn't Marcus's father."

"It was someone much closer."

Before Richard could reveal the name...

The video suddenly cut to black.

Marcus stared at the screen in disbelief.

A new message appeared.

REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED

FILE DELETED

The recording vanished before his eyes.

At that exact moment...

Someone knocked on his hotel door.

Three slow knocks.

Marcus looked through the peephole.

No one was there.

Only a small envelope lying on the floor.

He picked it up.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Julianne...

standing beside her father.

Taken less than an hour earlier.

On the back, someone had written in black ink:

"You're already too late."
