THE FILE THEY BURIED

Marcus stared at the second page.

His hands began to shake.

At the top, in bold red letters, were the words:

CLASSIFIED – EYES ONLY

Beneath them was a photograph.

It showed Marcus standing beside Julianne on their wedding day.

Someone had circled his face with a red marker.

Underneath, a handwritten note read:

"Asset approved."

"What...?"

Marcus whispered.

The next page was even worse.

It contained internal reports dating back twelve years.

Every major event in Julianne's life had been documented.

Her marriage.

Her pregnancies.

The birth of Samuel and Emma.

Even the purchase of their first home.

Someone had been watching them from the beginning.

Footsteps echoed behind him.

Marcus spun around.

The woman in the black coat had returned.

"You shouldn't be standing here," she said quietly.

"They're already watching."

"Who are you?"

"My name is Eleanor Brooks."

"I worked with your father-in-law."

Marcus frowned.

"Julianne's father died years ago."

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"No."

"He disappeared."

"And those are two very different things."

She handed him a small flash drive.

"He spent twenty years collecting evidence."

"Evidence against people powerful enough to erase entire families."

Marcus looked down at the drive.

"Why give this to me?"

"Because Julianne won't listen to you."

"But she might listen..."

"...if you finally tell her the truth."

Marcus's heart pounded.

"What truth?"

Eleanor looked him straight in the eyes.

"The truth about the night you first met Julianne."

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

Only three people had ever known what really happened that night.

Julianne.

Marcus.

And one other man.

A man everyone believed had died in a car explosion.

Eleanor stepped back into the crowd.

Before disappearing, she said one final sentence.

"He's alive."

At that exact moment, thousands of miles away in Switzerland...

Every alarm inside Julianne's estate suddenly began to sound.

INTRUDER ALERT.

Security guards rushed toward the front gate.

A black SUV had broken through the outer checkpoint.

The driver stepped out calmly.

He raised both hands.

"I don't want to hurt anyone."

"I only have one message..."

"...for Julianne."

The head of security aimed his weapon.

"State your name."

The man slowly removed his sunglasses.

Julianne, watching through the security cameras, froze.

She knew that face.

She had mourned him.

She had buried an empty coffin.

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

"...Dad?"
