THE FINAL SACRIFICE
00:58
The countdown echoed through the bunker.
Red lights flashed across the walls.
Concrete dust fell from the ceiling.
"We have to move!" Eleanor shouted.
Marcus grabbed the encrypted drive and slipped it into his jacket.
"This is what they were willing to kill for."
Richard leaned against the wall, struggling to stay on his feet.
His shoulder was bleeding heavily.
Julianne rushed to support him.
"I'm not leaving you."
Richard smiled faintly.
"You've said that twice today."
"I'm still not changing my mind."
A deep explosion shook the bunker.
00:43
The escape tunnel doors began to close.
Eleanor stared at the security monitor.
"The main exit is gone!"
Marcus looked around desperately.
"There has to be another way."
Richard slowly raised his hand.
"There is."
He pointed toward a narrow maintenance corridor.
"It leads to the surface..."
"...but someone has to stay behind."
Julianne froze.
"What do you mean?"
Richard reached into his pocket and removed an old brass key.
"This key manually unlocks the emergency blast doors."
"From the inside only."
Once turned...
"...they can never be opened again."
Julianne's eyes filled with tears.
"No."
Richard gently placed the key in her hand.
"For fifteen years..."
"I stayed alive because I hoped I'd see you again."
"I got my wish."
He looked at Samuel and Emma.
The children ran into his arms.
"Grandpa..."
Richard kissed each of them on the forehead.
"You gave me something I thought I'd never have."
"A family."
Marcus stepped forward.
"I'll stay."
Richard shook his head.
"You have another chance."
"Don't waste it."
He looked directly into Marcus's eyes.
"You failed my daughter once."
"Don't fail her again."
Marcus silently nodded.
"I won't."
The countdown reached:
00:20
Richard embraced Julianne one last time.
"I wasn't the man who gave you life."
"But thank you..."
"...for letting me be your father."
Julianne could no longer hold back her tears.
"You've always been my dad."
"And you always will be."
Richard smiled.
"That's all I ever needed to hear."
He gently pushed them toward the maintenance tunnel.
"Go."
Marcus carried Emma.
Julianne held Samuel's hand.
They ran.
Behind them, Richard inserted the brass key into the emergency control panel.
The blast doors slowly began to open.
He watched his family disappear into the tunnel.
Then he turned the key.
The doors slammed shut.
00:05
Richard looked up at the ceiling.
A peaceful smile crossed his face.
"For you, Sarah..."
he whispered, thinking of Julianne's late mother.
"And for you..."
"My daughter."
Outside, Julianne and the others reached the surface just as a deafening explosion erupted beneath the lake.
The ground trembled.
Water shot high into the air.
The entire underground bunker collapsed forever.
Julianne fell to her knees.
Tears streamed down her face.
The encrypted drive was safe.
William had escaped.
Richard was gone.
But his final gift...
had saved them all.
Far away, inside a private jet crossing the Atlantic, William Henderson watched the news on a tablet.
He smiled.
"They think the story is over."
He reached into his coat and removed a second encrypted drive.
The original.
"No..."
he whispered.
"The final chapter..."
"...begins now."
TO BE CONTINUED...
