Part 8: The Legal Reality

The deputy stepped forward, his boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. He pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt, the metallic clink sending a fresh wave of panic through the room.

“Mrs. Brooke Miller,” the deputy’s voice was deep and official, cutting through the murmurs of the horrified guests. “And Mr. Daniel Miller. You are being detained for questioning regarding suspected grand larceny, wire fraud, forgery of official legal documents, and attempted mortgage fraud.”

“Wait, wait, please!” Daniel cried out, stumbling backward against the dining chairs, knocking two of them over with a loud crash. “Mom! Please! Don’t let them arrest us! We’re your family! Talk to her, Evelyn! There has to be another way!”

Evelyn didn't even blink. She closed the leather folder with a decisive snap.

“Family doesn't forge dead men's signatures to steal a home out from under a widow,” Evelyn replied coldly. “The bank's fraud investigator flagged the title discrepancy forty-eight hours ago. The federal filing is already moving forward.”

Brooke tried to back toward the kitchen door, her eyes darting frantically toward the exit, but two of my cousins—uncles who had always respected Walter—blocked her path, their arms crossed over their chests like stone walls.

“You stay right where you are,” Uncle George growled, his face dark with anger. “You’ve brought enough shame into this house today.”
