Part 6: Silence Falls
The room dropped into a profound, suffocating quiet. You could have heard a pin drop on the hardwood floor.
Marlene dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the hearth, red liquid splattering across the bricks like spilled blood, but nobody flinched. All eyes whipped from the broken glass back to Brooke and Daniel.
Daniel looked like he had been struck across the face. He stared down at the papers on the table, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. He reached out a trembling hand, touching the edge of the forged quitclaim deed as if seeing a ghost.
“No,” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling violently. “No, this... this has to be a mistake. Brooke, what is this?”
Brooke didn’t look at her husband. Her eyes were fixed on Evelyn, dilated with panic. Her chest heaved beneath her designer sweater. For a long moment, she tried to maintain a facade of defiance, opening her mouth to fabricate a story, but the cold legal reality written on those pages choked the words in her throat.
“You didn’t think we check these things?” Evelyn asked softly, tilting her head. “In real estate fraud cases, the county recorder’s office flags duplicate notarizations immediately. Especially when the purported grantor has been deceased for half a decade.”
“I didn’t... we needed the liquidity,” Brooke finally spat out, her voice turning shrill and desperate as she turned to face the horrified relatives staring at her. “It was just a bridge loan! We were going to pay it back once Daniel’s promotion went through! The house was just sitting here, and she doesn't even live in town anymore!”
The confession hung in the air, raw and ugly, stripping away every polite illusion they had built over the years.
