Part 7: The True Face of Generosity
Aunt Sarah, who had spent the last ten minutes glaring daggers at me, slowly lowered her fork. The absolute shock on her face curdled into pure disgust as she looked at Daniel and his wife.
“You tried to steal your own mother’s house?” Sarah’s voice shook with righteous fury. “While she was letting you live here rent-free for six years? While she paid for your roof, your taxes, your insurance?”
“We didn't steal it!” Brooke shrieked, tears of frustration springing to her eyes as she realized her social standing, her comfortable life, and her entire narrative were dissolving into ash. “We just... we expedited the paperwork! She was going to give it to us eventually anyway! Everyone knows older people hoard property they don't use!”
I stepped closer to the table, my expression serene, untouched by the chaos swirling around us. At sixty-eight years old, I realized I had never felt more powerful.
“I didn't hoard anything, Brooke,” I said softly, my voice cutting through her hysterical excuses. “I shared everything I had with you because I loved my son. I opened this door when you had nothing, when you were terrified and broke. I asked for nothing in return except honesty and basic respect.”
I looked at Daniel, whose head was now buried in his hands, his shoulders shaking.
“Instead, you decided that my kindness made me a target. You treated my life’s work, my husband’s legacy, as a disposable asset to fund your lifestyle.”
