THE TRUTH BEHIND THE MISSING MONEY

PART 4 — THE PERSON I TRUSTED THE MOST

I stared at the document on the computer screen.

The transfer confirmation.

The hidden account.

The signature.

But one detail kept destroying every thought in my mind.

The second signature.

The approval signature.

The person who had authorized the payment.

The person who had access to the financial system.

The person who had been sitting across from me while I explained my suspicions.

My hands began to shake.

Because the signature belonged to…

Pastor Johan de Vries.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

No.

That was impossible.

Johan was the person who helped me uncover the truth.

He was the one who showed me Pieter’s shoebox.

He was the one who warned me not to judge too quickly.

Why would he betray the church?

Why would he help me investigate something he was involved in?

I closed the document quickly.

I needed answers.

Not assumptions.

Not another mistake.

I had already judged Pieter once.

I refused to make the same mistake again.

The next morning, I arrived at the church before anyone else.

The building was silent.

The same peaceful place where people came to pray.

The same place where I had believed everyone had honest hearts.

But now every shadow felt different.

I waited in my office.

At exactly 8:15, Johan walked in.

“Anna?”

His smile disappeared when he saw my face.

“What happened?”

I turned the computer screen toward him.

No words.

No accusations.

Just the evidence.

Johan looked at the document.

And for the first time since I had known him…

He looked afraid.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

“You found it,” he whispered.

My heart sank.

“Found what?”

He slowly sat down.

“The truth.”

I felt a wave of disappointment.

“Pastor… tell me I am misunderstanding this.”

He looked at his hands.

“I wish I could.”

The room became completely silent.

“Did you take the money?”

His eyes immediately filled with sadness.

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

“But I knew about it.”

That hurt even more.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“For months.”

I stood up.

“So while I was searching for a thief, you already knew?”

“I was trying to protect the church.”

“By hiding the truth?”

His eyes lowered.

“I made a mistake.”

* * *

Johan explained everything.

Six months earlier, the church roof needed urgent repairs.

The official cost estimate was much higher than expected.

The finance committee received several offers from construction companies.

One of them was Mark van Leeuwen’s company.

At first, everything looked normal.

The price was competitive.

The work started.

But then problems appeared.

Materials were cheaper than promised.

Workers complained.

Repairs needed to be redone.

And the invoices kept increasing.

Johan began to suspect something was wrong.

He investigated quietly.

That was when he discovered Mark had been creating false invoices.

But Johan didn’t immediately expose him.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because Mark threatened to destroy people.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Johan looked at me.

“He knew things about members of the church. Personal struggles. Financial problems. Family issues.”

My expression changed.

“He was blackmailing people?”

“Yes.”

“He told me if I accused him without undeniable proof, he would make sure the church collapsed.”

I looked at the document again.

“So you signed the payment?”

Johan nodded.

“I signed it because I was trying to track where the money went.”

I was confused.

“You intentionally approved the transfer?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To create a trail.”

He opened a folder from his bag.

Inside were copies of emails.

Messages.

Bank records.

Everything he had collected.

“I needed Mark to believe he was winning.”

I looked through the documents.

And slowly, I understood.

Johan wasn’t helping Mark steal.

He was building a case against him.

But then I noticed something.

“Wait.”

I looked at one email.

The date.

The sender.

My eyes widened.

“This is from three months ago.”

“Yes.”

“That means you knew about the missing money before I did.”

Johan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

He looked at me sadly.

“Because I knew you.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“You would have confronted him immediately.”

I stayed silent.

Because he was right.

That was exactly what I would have done.

“I needed someone who could find the truth without being controlled by fear.”

He looked at the ledger.

“And that person was you.”

* * *

Later that afternoon, Pieter joined us.

For the first time, all three of us sat together.

The person I accused.

The person I doubted.

The person I trusted.

All in one room.

“We have enough evidence now,” Pieter said.

“No,” Johan replied.

“We have enough to suspect him.”

Pieter looked confused.

“What more do we need?”

I looked at the documents.

“We need him to admit it.”

Everyone became silent.

Because we all knew the same thing.

Mark van Leeuwen was careful.

He had hidden behind respect.

Behind money.

Behind his reputation.

If we wanted justice…

we needed him to reveal himself.

That evening, I made a decision.

A dangerous one.

I would pretend nothing had happened.

I would continue acting like I still trusted Mark.

I would let him believe his secret was safe.

And then…

I would make him show us the truth himself.

The next Sunday, during the church meeting, Mark walked in smiling.

He shook hands.

He greeted everyone.

He looked like a respected member of the community.

A man nobody would ever suspect.

Then he saw me.

“Anna,” he said warmly.

“How are the financial records going?”

I smiled.

“Everything is fine.”

His eyes relaxed.

He believed me.

He believed he had won.

But he didn’t know one thing.

For the first time…

I wasn’t searching for the thief anymore.

I was waiting for him to expose himself.

And Mark van Leeuwen was about to make the biggest mistake of his life.
