THE TRUTH BEHIND THE MISSING MONEY

PART 2 — THE OLD SHOEBOX

I stared at the old shoebox sitting on Pastor Johan de Vries’ desk.

It was worn.

The edges were damaged.

The cardboard had turned slightly yellow with age.

It looked like something someone would keep in a forgotten corner of their attic.

Not something that could change everything I believed.

“Pastor…” I whispered.

“What is inside?”

Johan did not answer immediately.

Instead, he sat back down and looked at me carefully.

“Anna, before you opened that ledger and saw a missing amount, you saw a crime.”

I swallowed.

“Because I saw him taking money.”

“Yes,” Johan replied.

“And that is exactly why you need to see what happened before you decide who Pieter van Dijk really is.”

Slowly, he opened the shoebox.

The first thing I saw was a stack of receipts.

Heating oil.

Groceries.

Medicine.

Electricity bills.

I frowned.

“These are not church expenses.”

“No,” Johan said quietly.

“They are not.”

He picked up the first receipt.

“This one belongs to Maria Jansen.”

I knew that name.

Maria was seventy-eight years old.

She sat in the second row every Sunday.

She always brought homemade cookies for the children.

Everyone loved her.

“She lost her husband three years ago,” Johan continued.

“Her pension barely covers her rent. Last winter, her heating system broke. She had no money to repair it.”

I looked at the receipt again.

The amount was exactly 340 euros.

My heart stopped.

“Wait…”

Johan nodded.

“Yes.”

“That was the missing money?”

He looked at me.

“Yes, Anna.”

I felt a strange feeling in my chest.

Confusion.

Guilt.

Fear.

“But why would Pieter take money from the church fund without telling anyone?”

Johan sighed.

“That is the question I asked him too.”

He reached deeper into the box.

This time, he pulled out a small notebook.

The cover was old and scratched.

Inside were names.

Eight names.

Eight people from our community.

Maria Jansen.

Hendrik Vos.

Elsa Bakker.

Willem and Clara Smit.

And three others.

Beside each name were dates and amounts.

Every amount was different.

But every week, the money came from the same place.

The church roof repair fund.

I looked up.

“Pastor… are you saying Pieter has been stealing from the church to help these people?”

Johan looked down.

“No.”

His answer surprised me.

“He has been using his own money.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He started doing this six months ago. But he knew these people would refuse help if they knew where it came from.”

I shook my head.

“But the money disappeared from the church records.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Johan took a deep breath.

“Because Pieter replaced the money every Monday morning.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He would borrow from the roof fund on Sunday, give it to someone who needed it immediately, and then put the same amount back from his own account the next day.”

I looked at the ledger in front of me.

The missing 340 euros.

The exact amount every week.

Suddenly, everything looked different.

But one question remained.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?”

Johan smiled sadly.

“Because he knew what would happen.”

“What?”

“You would stop him.”

I felt offended.

“Why would I stop him?”

“Because you follow the rules, Anna.”

His words were gentle.

But they hurt.

“You protect every euro in this church. You believe every transaction must have a name, every payment must have a reason.”

“That is my job.”

“Yes.”

Johan nodded.

“And Pieter knew that.”

He closed the shoebox.

“He also knew that if the congregation found out, those eight people would lose their dignity.”

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the church garden was quiet.

Children were playing near the entrance.

People were laughing.

The same place where I had spent eleven years believing I knew everything.

But suddenly, I realized I only knew the numbers.

Not the stories behind them.

Still, something bothered me.

I turned back to Johan.

“Pastor, there is something I don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Why did Pieter let me see him?”

Johan became silent.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Like he was carrying a secret he had been afraid to reveal.

“He didn’t.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Johan looked directly at me.

“Pieter knew you were there.”

The room became completely silent.

“What?”

“He saw you sitting at the back of the church.”

My hands went cold.

“He knew I saw him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he explain?”

Johan looked at the shoebox.

“Because Pieter wanted you to find this.”

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

He slowly pushed the notebook toward me.

“Because there is one more thing inside that box.”

My fingers touched the cover.

I opened it carefully.

At the very bottom was a folded piece of paper.

A handwritten note.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Pieter van Dijk.

I unfolded it.

And read the first sentence.

“Anna, if you are reading this, it means you finally discovered the money.”

My breath caught.

The note continued:

“I know what it looks like. I know you think I betrayed the church.”

“But before you judge me, please understand one thing…”

I turned the page.

And the next line made my heart stop.

“The 340 euros were never the real secret.”

I looked at Johan.

“What does that mean?”

The pastor slowly stood up.

“Anna…”

His voice became serious.

“There is something about the church’s money that even Pieter didn’t know.”

I felt a chill run through me.

“What?”

Johan looked toward the locked cabinet behind him.

“The roof fund has been losing money for much longer than three months.”

I stared at him.

“Someone else has been taking money.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

“And Pieter…”

Johan paused.

“Pieter may have been trying to protect the church from the wrong person.”

I looked down at the note in my hand.

The missing 340 euros.

The old shoebox.

The eight names.

Everything I believed had changed in one afternoon.

Because maybe Pieter van Dijk was not the thief.

Maybe he was the only person trying to stop one.

And now I needed to find out who was really behind the missing money.
