THE TRUTH BEHIND THE MISSING MONEY
PART 3 — THE REAL THIEF INSIDE THE CHURCH
I couldn’t move.
The note from Pieter was still in my hands.
“The 340 euros were never the real secret.”
Those words kept repeating inside my head.
For three months, I had believed I was watching a man steal from our church.
I believed I had uncovered the truth.
But now I was standing in Pastor Johan de Vries’ office, realizing that I might have been wrong from the beginning.
“Who else has access to the church finances?” I asked.
Johan walked back to his desk.
“Very few people.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told me everything.
“Pastor?”
He looked at the ledger.
“The official access list includes you, me, and the finance committee.”
My stomach tightened.
“The finance committee?”
He nodded.
“Four people.”
I knew all of them.
They were respected members of our congregation.
People who had attended this church for years.
People everyone trusted.
“Who?”
Johan was silent.
Then he said one name.
“Mark van Leeuwen.”
I immediately recognized the name.
Mark had been part of the finance committee for seven years.
He was successful.
Confident.
Always wearing expensive suits.
He owned a construction company and often donated large amounts to church projects.
Many people admired him.
“He helped organize the roof renovation fund,” I whispered.
“Yes,” Johan replied.
“And that is why he had access to the accounts.”
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Are you saying Mark stole the money?”
“I’m saying we need proof before we accuse anyone.”
The same words I had heard earlier.
The same caution I had given myself when I suspected Pieter.
But now, something was different.
Because this time, I knew there was a hidden story.
* * *
The next morning, I arrived at the church earlier than usual.
I opened the financial records again.
This time, I wasn’t looking for missing money.
I was looking for patterns.
For eleven years, I had recorded every donation, every expense, every transfer.
I knew the system better than anyone.
And after two hours of searching, I noticed something strange.
The missing amounts weren’t random.
They were hidden inside larger payments.
Small changes.
Small enough that most people wouldn’t notice.
A supplier invoice increased by 200 euros.
A maintenance bill increased by 150 euros.
A material order that was slightly more expensive than expected.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing obvious.
But together…
Thousands of euros disappeared.
I wrote down every suspicious transaction.
Then I checked the dates.
My hands became cold.
Every unusual payment happened on the same weeks when Mark approved the invoices.
I closed the folder.
My heart was racing.
But before I could think further, someone knocked on my office door.
I looked up.
It was Pieter.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
The man I thought was a thief was standing in front of me.
The man I had secretly judged.
The man I almost destroyed.
“Anna,” he said quietly.
“I think you know now.”
I stood up.
“You knew?”
He lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You knew I saw you taking the money?”
“Yes.”
“And you let me believe you were stealing?”
Pieter sighed.
“I needed you to look deeper.”
I felt anger rising.
“You could have just told me!”
“No.”
His answer was immediate.
“No, because if I told you, you would have gone straight to the pastor. Then the church would have exploded with rumors.”
He looked tired.
Older than I had ever seen him.
“I wasn’t trying to hide the truth forever.”
“Then what were you trying to do?”
Pieter looked around the small office.
“This church has been my home for forty years.”
His voice became softer.
“I watched people build it. I watched families come here when they had nowhere else to go.”
He looked at the ledger.
“I couldn’t stand by while someone quietly destroyed it.”
I took a breath.
“Mark?”
Pieter didn’t answer.
But his silence was enough.
* * *
That afternoon, Johan, Pieter, and I met privately.
We compared every document.
Every payment.
Every signature.
And slowly, the picture became clear.
Mark had not taken one large amount.
He had taken small amounts over time.
Money that looked like mistakes.
Money that looked like accounting errors.
But there was one problem.
We still had no direct proof.
“We need something stronger,” Johan said.
Something that would prove Mark was responsible.
That evening, I stayed late at the church.
The building was completely quiet.
I sat alone in the office, staring at the financial records.
Then I noticed something.
A file on the computer.
A file I had never created.
The name was simple:
“Roof Project Final Costs.”
I opened it.
Inside were invoices.
Contracts.
Payment records.
And one document that made my blood run cold.
A transfer confirmation.
A large payment.
Sent to a private account.
The account holder’s name was hidden.
But the approval signature was visible.
I leaned closer to the screen.
And my heart stopped.
Because the signature belonged to…
Mark van Leeuwen.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
At the bottom of the document was another name.
Someone who had approved the transfer.
Someone I trusted completely.
Someone who had been helping me search for the truth.
I slowly stood up from my chair.
Because I realized something terrifying.
The thief was not only inside our church.
The thief was someone who had been sitting beside us all along.
And tomorrow morning…
I was going to discover how deep the betrayal really went.
TO BE CONTINUED…
