PART14
For the next few minutes…
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
I could only stare at the signature at the bottom of the document.
My name.
My handwriting.
My approval.
But I had never seen this paper before.
* * *
“How?”
My voice barely came out.
“How can my signature be here?”
* * *
Andrew looked away.
And that frightened me more than anything.
Because Andrew had always been the person who had answers.
The person who stayed calm when everyone else panicked.
But now…
He looked afraid.
* * *
“Andrew.”
I stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.”
* * *
He closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“You were never supposed to find this document.”
* * *
My stomach tightened.
* * *
“Who hid it?”
* * *
Andrew didn’t answer.
* * *
And that was an answer itself.
* * *
“Jonathan?”
* * *
“No.”
* * *
“Richard?”
* * *
“No.”
* * *
I stared at him.
“Then who?”
* * *
Andrew looked at the photograph on the table.
At Richard Vale’s face.
Then at my father’s old documents.
* * *
“Your father.”
* * *
The room went silent.
* * *
“My father hid proof that I signed something?”
* * *
Andrew shook his head.
“No.”
* * *
“Then what?”
* * *
He opened another folder.
Inside were dozens of pages.
Contracts.
Financial records.
Letters.
Photographs.
* * *
“He hid proof that your entire marriage was arranged before you even met Jonathan.”
* * *
I froze.
* * *
“What?”
* * *
Andrew pushed the documents toward me.
* * *
“The marriage was never just a marriage.”
* * *
My hands trembled as I turned the pages.
* * *
There were dates.
Names.
Meetings.
My father’s signature.
Richard Vale’s signature.
And another name.
* * *
A name I had never heard before.
* * *
Alexander Whitmore.
* * *
“Who is this?”
I asked.
* * *
Andrew’s face changed.
* * *
“Someone who has been watching this family for decades.”
* * *
I felt a cold wave move through me.
* * *
“Watching?”
* * *
“Yes.”
* * *
“Why?”
* * *
Andrew hesitated.
* * *
“Because your father and Richard built something much bigger than a company.”
* * *
I looked at the documents.
* * *
“What?”
* * *
“A system.”
* * *
The word sounded impossible.
* * *
“A system that decided who could rise.”
* * *
I shook my head.
* * *
“No.”
* * *
I stepped back.
* * *
“My father would never do that.”
* * *
Andrew looked at me sadly.
* * *
“Your father loved you.”
* * *
“Then why would he control my life?”
* * *
“Because he was afraid.”
* * *
“Afraid of what?”
* * *
Andrew’s voice became quieter.
* * *
“Of losing everything he built.”
* * *
I looked down at the documents again.
* * *
For seventeen years, I thought my life was a series of choices.
My choice to marry Jonathan.
My choice to trust him.
My choice to build a family.
* * *
But now…
I didn’t know which choices were actually mine.
* * *
A notification appeared on my phone.
* * *
Another message.
* * *
Richard.
* * *
I opened it.
* * *
“Claire, do not blame your father yet.”
* * *
I frowned.
* * *
A second message arrived.
* * *
“He made mistakes. But he was trying to protect you.”
* * *
Then another.
* * *
“The person who manipulated your life is still alive.”
* * *
My heart stopped.
* * *
I typed quickly.
* * *
Who?
* * *
The reply came instantly.
* * *
Only one name.
* * *
Jonathan Mercer.
* * *
I stared at the screen.
* * *
Impossible.
* * *
Jonathan was the man who had been controlled.
The man who inherited power.
The man who failed my father’s test.
* * *
How could he also be the person controlling everything?
* * *
Andrew saw my expression.
* * *
“What did Richard say?”
* * *
I slowly turned the phone toward him.
* * *
The color disappeared from Andrew’s face.
* * *
“No…”
* * *
“What?”
* * *
He grabbed the phone.
Read the message again.
* * *
“No, this changes everything.”
* * *
“What does it mean?”
* * *
Andrew looked at me.
* * *
“It means Jonathan wasn’t just chosen.”
* * *
A pause.
* * *
“He volunteered.”
* * *
I felt the world shift beneath me.
* * *
“Volunteered?”
* * *
“Yes.”
* * *
“To marry me?”
* * *
Andrew nodded slowly.
* * *
“To enter your family.”
* * *
I couldn’t understand.
* * *
“Why?”
* * *
Andrew looked at the final document.
The one with my forged signature.
* * *
“Because Jonathan knew something about you before you knew it yourself.”
* * *
My breath caught.
* * *
“What?”
* * *
Andrew whispered:
* * *
“He knew who you really were.”
* * *
I stared at him.
* * *
“I’m Claire.”
* * *
“No.”
* * *
Andrew’s voice was almost a whisper.
* * *
“That’s who everyone allowed you to believe you were.”
* * *
My hands went cold.
* * *
“Then who am I?”
* * *
Before Andrew could answer…
The lights in the house suddenly went out.
* * *
Darkness surrounded us.
* * *
Then a sound came from the hallway.
* * *
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Familiar.
* * *
Andrew immediately stood up.
* * *
“Claire…”
* * *
His voice was filled with fear.
* * *
“Stay behind me.”
* * *
The footsteps stopped.
* * *
A man appeared in the doorway.
* * *
And when the light from outside revealed his face…
I forgot how to breathe.
* * *
Because the person standing there…
Was the last person I expected to see.
* * *
Jonathan Mercer.
* * *
Alive.
* * *
And smiling.
* * *
“I think it’s time,” he said quietly.
* * *
“For you to finally learn the truth about yourself.”
* * *
