PART 10 — THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
I stared at the photograph in my hands.
For several seconds, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.
There was Jonathan.
Standing beside him was my father.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the expression on their faces.
They weren’t arguing.
They weren’t enemies.
They were standing together.
Like partners.
Like people who had shared a secret for years.
I looked at Jonathan.
“What is this?”
For the first time since he entered the archive, he didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence frightened me more than anything else.
Because Jonathan always had an answer.
A perfect explanation.
A carefully prepared story.
But now…
He looked uncertain.
Andrew took the photograph from my hand.
His face changed instantly.
“No.”
I turned toward him.
“You know this?”
Andrew stared at the image.
“I thought this was impossible.”
“What is impossible?”
He looked at Jonathan.
“You told me he was gone.”
Jonathan said nothing.
My heart started racing.
“Who was gone?”
Andrew slowly lowered the photograph.
“Richard Vale.”
The name echoed through the room.
The missing business partner.
The man who helped Jonathan create his empire.
The man whose disappearance had been hidden for years.
I looked at Jonathan.
“You knew my father and Richard Vale?”
Jonathan finally spoke.
“Yes.”
“But you told everyone Richard disappeared after betraying you.”
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“Everyone believes the story they are given.”
My anger rose.
“You’re still doing it.”
“Doing what?”
“Changing the story.”
Jonathan looked at me.
“No, Claire.”
His voice became quieter.
“For the first time, I’m telling you the truth.”
I almost believed him.
Almost.
But seventeen years of lies had taught me something.
The truth from Jonathan always came with a price.
“What happened?” I asked.
Jonathan walked toward the desk.
“Your father and Richard were the only two people who understood how business really worked.”
I frowned.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning they understood that power was never about money. It was about information.”
He picked up another file.
“Richard created the system. Your father discovered how dangerous it could become.”
Andrew looked confused.
“My father was trying to stop him?”
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.”
Then he looked at me.
“But your father made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He trusted the wrong person.”
The room became silent.
I looked at Andrew.
Then at Jonathan.
“What are you saying?”
Jonathan placed the file on the desk.
“Your father believed he could control what he created.”
I opened the file.
Inside were documents showing meetings between my father, Richard Vale, and Jonathan.
But there was something strange.
Jonathan wasn’t an outsider.
He was involved from the beginning.
Not as an enemy.
As someone they trusted.
My hands shook as I turned the pages.
There were agreements.
Business plans.
Financial strategies.
And then I found the document that made me stop.
A partnership agreement.
Signed by three people.
My father.
Richard Vale.
And Jonathan Mercer.
Years before I ever met him.
I looked up.
“You knew my father before you met me.”
Jonathan didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
The pain I felt was different from anger.
Because this was the final piece.
The beginning of the lie.
“You didn’t meet me by chance.”
“No.”
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
“Then why?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“At first?”
He paused.
“I needed access.”
My eyes filled with disappointment.
“And later?”
His expression changed.
For a brief moment, I saw something real.
Something human.
“Later, things changed.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
“That’s because I’m not the only person who lied to you.”
I turned away.
“I’m done listening to excuses.”
But then Jonathan said one sentence that stopped me.
“Your father knew I loved you.”
I froze.
“What?”
Jonathan continued.
“He knew everything about my original plan.”
I looked back at him.
“And he still allowed the marriage?”
Jonathan nodded.
“Because he believed you could change me.”
The room went silent.
My father.
The man who warned me about Jonathan.
The man who left me the archive.
Had he known everything?
Had he known Jonathan’s intentions and still let me marry him?
I felt lost.
Then Andrew spoke.
“Claire…”
I looked at him.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
Andrew looked ashamed.
“I found out after Dad died.”
“Found out what?”
He swallowed.
“That your father wasn’t just investigating Jonathan.”
I waited.
“He was investigating himself.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Andrew pointed to the final pages.
I picked them up.
And there it was.
A handwritten note from my father.
Only one sentence.
“The greatest mistake of my life was helping create the man who destroyed my daughter’s future.”
My hands went numb.
Because suddenly, the story changed again.
Jonathan wasn’t just a monster who appeared from nowhere.
He was connected to my family long before our marriage.
And my father…
My own father…
Had played a role in creating him.
I looked at Jonathan.
“Tell me everything.”
For the first time, he looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a man carrying years of secrets.
He looked toward the archive door.
“There is one more person who knows the entire truth.”
“Who?”
Jonathan took a deep breath.
“The person who started all of this.”
“Richard Vale.”
I shook my head.
“Richard disappeared.”
Jonathan looked at me.
“No.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He didn’t disappear.”
Jonathan whispered:
“He was hiding.”
And somewhere in the city…
The man everyone believed was gone for fifteen years…
Was about to return.
