PART 11 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD
For fifteen years, everyone believed Richard Vale had disappeared.
Some said he ran away.
Some said he lost everything and vanished.
Others believed Jonathan had destroyed him completely.
But nobody knew the truth.
Because the truth was hidden by the same people who controlled the story.
I looked at Jonathan.
“You’re telling me Richard Vale is alive?”
Jonathan didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Yes,” he finally said.
My brother stepped back.
“How is that possible?”
Jonathan looked at him.
“Because Richard wanted the world to believe he was gone.”
I couldn’t understand.
“Why would someone fake their own disappearance?”
Jonathan looked at the files around us.
“Because sometimes disappearing is the only way to survive.”
I almost laughed.
Coming from Jonathan, those words felt impossible.
The man who destroyed people’s lives was now talking about survival.
But then I remembered something.
The fear in his eyes.
Not the fear of losing money.
Not the fear of losing his reputation.
The fear of someone else.
Someone more powerful.
“Where is he?” I asked.
Jonathan looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.”
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I know it sounds impossible.”
“It does.”
Jonathan took a deep breath.
“But Richard disappeared from everyone. Including me.”
That was the first time I had ever heard Jonathan admit he didn’t have control.
And somehow, that frightened me more.
Because if Jonathan Mercer couldn’t find someone…
That person was very good at hiding.
Andrew walked toward the documents.
“Why would Richard hide from you?”
Jonathan looked at him.
“Because he knew what I became.”
Silence.
The honesty of that answer surprised me.
For a moment, I saw something I had never seen before.
Regret.
Not enough to erase what he had done.
Not enough to forgive him.
But real regret.
“You knew what you were becoming,” I said.
Jonathan looked at me.
“Yes.”
“And you still continued.”
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
The admission hurt.
Because for years, I wondered if Jonathan truly understood the damage he caused.
Now I knew.
He understood.
He simply chose power anyway.
Then Andrew found something.
A small envelope hidden inside the final file.
“Claire.”
I turned around.
He held it carefully.
“Your name is on this.”
My heart sank.
Another letter.
Another secret.
Another piece of a life I thought I understood.
I opened it.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Not my father’s.
Not Jonathan’s.
At the top was a name.
Richard Vale.
I started reading.
“Claire Mercer, if you are reading this, then Jonathan has finally lost control of the story.”
I looked at Jonathan.
He stared at the letter.
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
The letter continued.
“I knew your father would try to protect you. I knew Jonathan would eventually choose ambition over loyalty. But there is something neither of them wanted you to know.”
I turned the page.
My hands became colder.
“Your father and Jonathan did not meet because of business.”
I frowned.
What did that mean?
The next sentence made my heart stop.
“They met because of a secret that involved your family long before Jonathan entered your life.”
I looked at Andrew.
He looked just as confused.
The letter continued.
“Your father was not trying to stop Jonathan from building his empire.”
A pause.
Then:
“He was trying to stop Jonathan from discovering who he really was.”
The room became completely silent.
I looked up.
“What does this mean?”
Nobody answered.
Not Andrew.
Not Jonathan.
Because somehow, they both knew.
There was a truth buried deeper than the foundation scandal.
Deeper than the financial crimes.
Deeper than the marriage built on deception.
A truth about Jonathan himself.
I turned toward him.
“What are you hiding?”
Jonathan looked at me.
For the first time, he didn’t look like a powerful businessman.
He looked like someone whose greatest secret had finally been found.
“Claire…”
His voice was low.
“There are things about my past that even I was not supposed to know.”
I froze.
“What?”
Jonathan looked at the letter.
“Richard found out before I did.”
“Found out what?”
He was silent for a long moment.
Then he said:
“The reason your father chose me.”
My breathing stopped.
“My father chose you?”
Jonathan nodded.
“He didn’t just allow me into your life.”
“He brought me there.”
The words hit harder than anything before.
My father.
The man who warned me.
The man who tried to protect me.
Was he the person who placed Jonathan in my path?
I looked back at Richard’s letter.
The final sentence was written in bold.
“Claire, before you judge Jonathan Mercer, you must discover the truth about the man who created him.”
I slowly lowered the paper.
Because now I understood.
The biggest secret was never Jonathan’s empire.
It wasn’t the money.
It wasn’t the foundation.
It wasn’t even the lies.
The biggest secret was the connection between Jonathan and my father.
And somewhere out there…
Richard Vale was the only person alive who knew the entire truth.
