The Envelope They Should Never Have Opened
Part 4
No one spoke for several seconds.
The words "former business partner" hung over the boardroom like a storm cloud.
Daniel broke the silence first.
"You told me he died in a car accident."
Amelia nodded slowly.
"That's what everyone was told."
"And you don't believe it?"
"I stopped believing it the night Nathan deleted every file connected to the project."
She stood up.
"I have to meet the investigators."

An hour later, Amelia entered a secure conference room inside the Federal Commercial Fraud Division.
The lead investigator, Special Agent Marcus Reed, was waiting beside a projector.
"We've confirmed the financial fraud," he said. "But Project Eclipse is something else."
He pressed a button.
A photograph filled the screen.
A smiling man in his early forties stood beside a much younger Nathan Holloway.
"This is Victor Hayes," Reed explained.
"Co-founder of Holloway Dynamics."
Amelia stared at the image.
Victor had been the brilliant engineer who believed technology should improve lives instead of making executives rich.
Six years earlier, newspapers reported that he had died after losing control of his car on a rainy mountain road.
The investigation had closed within a week.
Everyone accepted it.
Except Amelia.
Reed displayed another image.
A damaged brake assembly.
"It was preserved as evidence."
Amelia frowned.
"I thought the vehicle was destroyed."
"So did we."
"What changed?"
Reed slid a thin folder across the table.
"A retired mechanic contacted us yesterday after seeing the news about your company."
Inside the folder was a signed statement.
The mechanic claimed he had been paid in cash to replace the original brake components before investigators inspected the wreck.
Amelia's heartbeat quickened.
"Who paid him?"
"He identified only one person."
Reed looked directly into her eyes.
"Nathan Holloway."

Across town, Nathan sat alone in his office.
The building felt strangely empty.
Most executives had already gone home.
Others avoided him completely.
His phone rang.
Private number.
He answered immediately.
"Who is this?"
A calm male voice replied.
"You should have destroyed every file."
Nathan's face turned pale.
"I thought I did."
"You thought wrong."
The line went dead.
Nathan immediately called back.
The number no longer existed.
For the first time in years...
He looked genuinely afraid.

Meanwhile, Eleanor refused to leave the family mansion.
She wandered through room after room, convinced someone would fix everything.
Instead, two uniformed officers arrived at the front gate.
"We're here to deliver a court notice."
"I don't accept it."
"You don't have a choice."
She tore open the envelope.
The court had approved a temporary restriction preventing the sale or transfer of the property until the investigation ended.
"This house belongs to my family!"
One officer answered quietly.
"That will be decided later."
As they drove away, Eleanor looked out over the gardens she had spent decades showing off to friends.
For the first time...
She wondered if they had already lost everything.

That evening, Amelia returned to the headquarters.
Most lights were off.
Only one office remained illuminated.
Nathan's.
She stepped inside without knocking.
He looked exhausted.
His tie lay across the desk.
His eyes were bloodshot.
"You came to enjoy this?" he asked bitterly.
"No."
"Then why?"
"I came to ask one question."
Nathan laughed.
"After everything you've done?"
She ignored him.
"What happened to Victor?"
The smile disappeared from Nathan's face.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You've been lying for years."
"I said I don't know."
Amelia reached into her bag and placed the mechanic's statement on his desk.
Nathan read only the first paragraph.
His hands began to tremble.
"Where did you get this?"
"So it's true."
He looked away.
Several long seconds passed.
Finally he whispered,
"It wasn't supposed to happen."
Amelia froze.
"What?"
"He wanted to expose everything."
Her voice became almost inaudible.
"So you admit it?"
Nathan shook his head violently.
"No."
"You just did."
Before he could answer, another voice came from the doorway.
"So that's your story?"
Everyone turned.
Special Agent Reed stood there with two investigators.
Behind them were uniformed officers.
Reed held up a warrant.
"Nathan Holloway, you are under arrest for obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and multiple counts of financial fraud."
Nathan stumbled backward.
"You can't prove anything."
"Maybe not yet," Reed replied.
"But we're getting closer."
The officers stepped forward.
Nathan looked desperately at Amelia.
"Please..."
It was the first time in eight years he had asked her for anything without arrogance.
She met his eyes.
"The truth has waited long enough."
As the handcuffs clicked into place, another investigator hurried into the office carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"Agent Reed."
"What is it?"
"We recovered a hidden hard drive from the CEO's private safe."
Reed glanced at the label.
His expression darkened.
Written across it in black marker were three chilling words:
OPEN ONLY IF I DIE.
Amelia felt a chill run through her body.
Whatever was stored on that drive...
Victor Hayes had known his life was in danger long before the crash.
