The Envelope They Should Never Have Opened

Part 3

The sunrise over the city brought more than a new day.

It brought headlines.

HOLLOWAY DYNAMICS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

BOARD CALLS EMERGENCY SESSION.

MYSTERY SHAREHOLDER TAKES CONTROL.

Nathan Holloway stared at the television in his office, unable to process what he was seeing.

Less than twelve hours ago, he had walked into a celebration convinced he had ended his marriage on his own terms.

Now reporters surrounded the company's headquarters.

Employees gathered in small groups, whispering.

His phone never stopped ringing.

He ignored every call.

Another knock echoed against his office door.

"Come in."

The chief legal officer stepped inside, followed by two unfamiliar men wearing dark suits.

One of them held up an identification badge.

"Mr. Holloway, we're with the Federal Commercial Fraud Division."

Nathan forced a smile.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

"We're here to preserve documents and electronic records."

"We have lawyers."

"And we have a court order."

The lead investigator handed him a copy.

Nathan scanned the first page.

His hands began to shake.

Every financial server...

Every executive email...

Every accounting record...

Nothing could be deleted.

Nothing could be altered.

"We'll also require your company laptop and mobile phone."

Nathan looked up.

"You can't be serious."

"We're very serious."

Across town, Amelia sat inside a quiet café overlooking the river.

For the first time in years, she enjoyed a cup of coffee without checking her phone every few minutes.

Daniel arrived carrying another folder.

"You should see this."

He placed several photographs on the table.

Pictures of employees entering the headquarters.

No smiles.

No confidence.

Only uncertainty.

"The board wants to meet you this afternoon."

"They're moving quickly."

"They're scared."

Amelia nodded.

"They should be."

Daniel hesitated.

"There's something else."

"What is it?"

"The investigators found an encrypted storage account."

"Did they open it?"

"They're trying."

Amelia looked out the window.

"If it's the account I'm thinking of..."

Daniel finished her sentence.

"...it could destroy Nathan."

Meanwhile, Eleanor refused to believe the situation was real.

She marched into the mansion's study and opened the family safe.

Inside were property deeds, jewelry certificates, investment records...

And an official notice she had never seen before.

Temporary Asset Restriction.

"No..."

She searched frantically.

Another notice.

Then another.

Every major property owned through the family trust had been frozen.

She immediately called her financial advisor.

"Fix this."

"I'm afraid we can't."

"You work for me!"

"I work for the law, Mrs. Holloway."

She slammed the phone onto the desk.

For the first time in decades...

Money could not solve her problem.

At two o'clock that afternoon, Amelia entered Holloway Dynamics through the main entrance.

Six months earlier, receptionists barely looked up when she walked by.

Today every employee stood.

Some lowered their heads.

Others quietly applauded.

She didn't acknowledge the applause.

She simply walked toward the executive elevator.

The boardroom doors opened.

Twelve directors waited inside.

The chairman stood first.

"Ms. Carter..."

She interrupted gently.

"Amelia is fine."

He nodded.

"We owe you an apology."

"No."

The room fell silent.

"You owe the employees one."

No one argued.

She placed a small flash drive in the center of the table.

"I didn't come here for revenge."

"Then why?"

"To save what's left."

One director frowned.

"You still care about this company?"

Amelia smiled sadly.

"I built it."

Another director leaned forward.

"Can it survive?"

"It can."

"And Nathan?"

She looked around the room before answering.

"That depends on how much he chose to hide."

Three floors below, investigators continued searching Nathan's office.

A young forensic analyst connected an external drive recovered from a locked cabinet.

The screen flashed.

Archive Successfully Opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

The analyst froze.

"Sir..."

The lead investigator walked over.

"What is it?"

"You need to see this."

Folder after folder contained fake invoices.

Offshore transfers.

Shell companies.

Secret contracts.

But one folder stood out above all the others.

Its name consisted of only two words.

Project Eclipse.

The investigator opened it.

His expression changed instantly.

"Call headquarters."

"Right now."

Back upstairs, Amelia's phone vibrated.

A message from the lead investigator.

We found Eclipse. We need to speak immediately.

Daniel noticed her face.

"What happened?"

She slowly locked the screen.

"I hoped those files no longer existed."

"What are they?"

Amelia looked toward the city skyline.

"They're not about stolen money."

Daniel frowned.

"Then what?"

She answered quietly.

"They're about the accident that killed Nathan's former business partner."

The entire room fell silent.

If Project Eclipse contained what Amelia feared...

This case had just become far bigger than corporate fraud.
