PART 7: Escape Through the Harbor

"There they are! Get them!" roared a rough voice from behind the stack of empty containers. The bright beam of the flashlights swept wildly across the rusting train cars. Lisa grabbed my arm and pulled me into the darkness. "Run! If they catch us, we won't get out of here alive!" We flew across the bumpy gravel, stumbling over loose stones and rusted rails.

My breath burned in my lungs, and the cold night air cut into my throat like razor blades. Behind us, we heard the pounding of heavy boots and loud shouts drawing closer. Lisa led me toward a broken fence at the edge of the yard, where a gap in the wire offered a view of the dark streets leading to the harbor. We scrambled through the sharp iron points, my coat catching on something, but I pushed through without looking back.

The harbor lay before us, an expansive labyrinth of giant containers, cranes standing like steel giants against the night sky, and the gloomy sound of splashing water against the quay. "Warehouse number 42," Lisa panted as we hid behind a stack of wooden pallets. "The boat is waiting there." My heart pounded in my throat. We were close, but behind us I heard the sound of an approaching car, its headlights piercing the fog. They were hunting us with a vehicle.
