PART 10: The Abandoned Pier
The cry "Who's there?!" reverberated through the hollow space of the warehouse like a gunshot. Lisa and I didn't think for a second; we raced down the stairs and bolted through the rear emergency door that opened directly onto the dark wooden pier by the water. The fresh, salty sea breeze hit us in the face. In the distance, a sleek, black motor yacht bobbed on the water, its engine already idling with a soft, deep rumble.
On the pier, a man in a raincoat with the pink bundle in his arms was walking toward the ship's gangway. "Halt! Stop right there!" I screamed, my voice bursting with desperation and adrenaline. The man turned around, visibly startled when he saw us running, and quickened his pace toward the boat. Behind us, we heard the heavy boots of Mrs. Kramer and her henchmen storming out of the warehouse.
"Hurry! Don't let them reach the boat!" Kramer shouted from the distance. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, my arms outstretched toward the man on the pier. Only a few meters more. The man stepped aboard the yacht and hauled up the gangway. I jumped forward with all my might, just as the ship pulled away from the quay. My fingers brushed against the deck railing, but slipped off the wet metal. With a splash, I fell onto the cold wood of the pier while the yacht slowly sailed out into the open waters of the harbor.
