Part 8: The Confrontation
Before Marcus could formulate a response, the private elevator doors at the end of the hallway chimed loudly.
Two federal agents in dark suits stepped out, flanked by local precinct detectives. They didn't look like they were here for a corporate chat; they moved with the absolute, unyielding certainty of an apex predator closing in on its prey.
Marcus stumbled backward, his eyes darting frantically toward the stairwell exit.
“Mr. Marcus Vance?” the lead federal agent asked, flashing a gold badge as he approached.
Marcus didn't answer. He turned to bolt, but the second agent cut off his path instantly, pressing him firmly against the polished wood-paneled wall and clicking the cold steel cuffs around his wrists.
The commotion echoed through the entire executive floor. Heads popped out of glass-walled conference rooms. Whispers erupted like wildfire among the senior staff.
I stood in the doorway of my office, watching the man who had helped manage my empire for two decades get hauled away in handcuffs. It wasn't a moment of triumphant vindication. It felt hollow, heavy, and tragic.
“Arthur! You can't do this!” Marcus shouted over his shoulder as they dragged him toward the elevators. “I protected your interests! I made you richer!”
“You didn't protect my interests, Marcus,” I said softly, my voice cutting cleanly through the hallway chatter. “You stole from the people who built this city from the floor up.”
