PART 5 — What the Sea Could Never Take Away
The weeks following Richard's arrest felt strange. For the first time in three years, I didn't have to wake up with the thought that James was gone forever. Pero at the same time, everything still felt uncertain. Because even though James was slowly getting his memories back, pieces of his past were still missing. And the biggest piece was the day he had left.
The day our future was supposed to begin. One evening, James and I sat together on the beach. The sun slowly slipped behind the horizon. Just like on the many evenings before everything changed. "I always thought the sea was my enemy," I said softly. James looked at me. "And now?" I looked at the waves. "Now I think the sea didn't take everything." He smiled sadly.
"Then what did she take?" I looked at him. "Three years of our lives." He was silent. Because that was the truth. There were no words that could bring those years back. No apologies that could fill the empty room. No promises that could bring back my lost child. Pero sometimes healing isn't about getting back what you've lost. Sometimes it's about learning to live with what happened.
That night, something unexpected happened. James woke up from a dream. Pero this time, it wasn't a nightmare. He sat upright in bed. His eyes were filled with tears. "Emily..." I woke up. "What's wrong?" He looked at me as if he had found something precious. "I remember." My heart began to beat faster. "Remember what?" "That evening." He took my hand.
"The night before I left." I remained still. Afraid of disturbing the memory. James closed his eyes. "You were standing in the kitchen." A small smile appeared on his face. "You were so nervous." I felt my eyes grow damp. "I had hidden the box with the baby socks." He looked at me. "You thought I didn't notice something was going on." A tear slid down his cheek.
"Pero I knew." I laughed softly through my tears. "You knew?" He nodded. "I knew something special was happening." He gripped my hand tighter. "And I wanted to come home to tell you I had never been happier." My lips began to tremble. "Why are you only remembering this now?" He looked out at the sea. "Because my mind tried to forget what was too painful." He looked back at me.
"Pero my heart never forgot you." Those words broke something open inside me. For three years, I had thought I was alone in my grief. Pero James had lost too. He had lost his name. His past. His family. His chance to be a father. He hadn't chosen to leave. He had been lost. And yet, something inside him had always searched for me. A month later, James and I stood by the coast once again.
Pero this time, I wasn't standing alone. No goodbye. No tears of loss. Only a new beginning. James was holding a small box. My heart stopped for a moment. "James..." He smiled. "I know I've called you my wife before." He opened the box. "Pero I want to choose you all over again." Inside lay my old wedding ring. The ring he had been wearing when he vanished.
"I can't give you back the three years." His voice trembled. "I can't bring our child back." My eyes filled with tears. "Pero I can promise you that I will spend the rest of my life loving you." I looked at the man in front of me. Not the man I had lost. Sondern the man who had been found again. I nodded. And for the first time in three years, I wasn't crying from sorrow.
I was crying because my heart finally dared to hope again. Months later, together we visited a place I had avoided for years. The sea. The very same sea that had once been my greatest fear. James stood beside me. "Are you still scared?" I looked at the waves. "No." "Why not?" I smiled. "Because now I know some things don't disappear." He looked at me inquiringly. "Like what?" I took his hand. "Love." The sea had taken our dreams. It had taken my husband. It had taken my child. Pero it could never take what remained hidden deep inside us. The memories. The love. And the promise that some people find each other... even after life has taken everything from them. THE END
