PART 2 — The Memories That Returned

That night, I stood across from James for hours without knowing what to say. The man in front of me was the same person I had said goodbye to three years ago. Pero at the same time, he felt like a stranger. How could someone forget my name? How could someone forget that we had built a life together? That he kissed me every morning before going to work?

That he had wanted to put his hand on my stomach when I told him we were having a child? I looked at him and felt two conflicting emotions at the same time. I wanted to embrace him. Pero I also wanted to scream. "Why didn't you look for me?" My voice broke. "For three years, I thought you were dead, James."   He closed his eyes. "I know." "You don't know." My tears began to fall.

"You don't know what it felt like to wake up every morning and realize you would never walk through that door again."   He said nothing. Pero I saw the pain in his face. For the first time, I understood that his silence wasn't indifference. It was grief. Deeply hidden grief. "I wanted to come to you," he whispered. "Pero you didn't even know who I was."   He nodded slowly.

"That's true." He looked at his hands. "After I was found, I knew nothing anymore. No name. No past. No memories." He took a deep breath. "Only a feeling that I had lost someone."   I looked at him in astonishment. "A feeling?" "Yes." He looked up. "Every night, I dreamed of a woman by the sea."   Mein Herz stopped for a moment. "About me?" He nodded.

"I always saw the same image. A woman with tears in her eyes looking at a ship."   I felt a chill run through my body. "Pero I didn't know who she was." He slowly wiped away a tear. "I thought it was just a dream." "Until when?" "Until a few months ago."   He told me that small things slowly began to return. A song he heard. A scent that reminded him of our house.

An old photo he saw somewhere. And then the biggest memory came back. The day before he vanished. "Emily..." His voice became softer. "There was something strange about that night."   I looked at him. "What do you mean?" He hesitated. "It wasn't an ordinary storm."   My heart began to beat faster. "James, what are you saying?" He looked at me as if he were afraid to speak the truth.

"I think my accident wasn't an accident."   The room went still. "What do you mean?" He looked at the floor. "Before the storm began, I discovered something about the ship." "What?" He swallowed. "Someone had tampered with the equipment."   I felt my breath vanish. "Why did you never tell me that?" "Because I only found out right before we set sail." He shook his head.

"And after that, all I remember is the waves... the water... and someone telling me I had to disappear."   My hands began to tremble. "Who?" He looked at me. "I don't know."   Those words made everything even scarier. For three years, I had thought I only lost my husband and my child. Pero maybe someone had tried to erase James from my life entirely.

"I came to you today because I finally understood who you were." His voice broke. "When I saw you on the beach... something inside me felt like it was waking up."   I looked away. "Pero you said you didn't know me." He closed his eyes. "Because I was afraid." "Of what?" "Because I saw how much pain I had caused you."   I remained silent. He continued.

"I saw your face when you said my name." A tear slid down his cheek. "And I knew immediately that you were the one I had searched for my whole life."   My heart ached. Because somewhere deep inside, I knew he wasn't lying. Pero my grief was still greater than my trust. "James..." I looked at him. "There is something you need to know." He waited.

"Our child..." My voice broke. "Our child didn't make it."   His face changed. As if he were losing another piece of his life all over again. "Our... child?" I nodded. "Yes."   He covered his mouth with his hand. His tears fell without a sound. "I didn't even know I was a father."   I looked at him. For the first time, I didn't just see my lost husband.

I also saw a father who had never gotten the chance to hold his child. And in that moment, I understood something. James hadn't just lost me. He had lost everything. His memories. His identity. His family. Yet, there was one thing that even three years without memory couldn't erase. His love for me. That night, while the rain tapped against the hotel window, James told me one last thing.

Something that would change my entire world once again. "I found someone who knows more about that storm." I looked at him in shock. "Who?" He looked toward the door. "The person who saved me that night." He paused briefly. "And he wants to finally tell the truth."   Pero what James didn't know yet... was that the truth about that night hadn't just changed his life. It would also reveal why someone wanted me to believe he was gone forever.
