PART 5 — THE PERSON WHO CONTROLLED THE ENTIRE FAMILY
The black SUV stopped in front of the farmhouse.
For a moment, everything went silent.
Even the wind seemed to disappear.
Aaron grabbed my arm.
“Laura, you need to leave.”
I stared at him.
“Who is it?”
But he didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
Because the car door opened.
And the person who stepped out made my entire body go cold.
Gregory.
My stepfather.
The man who had stood behind my mother at the dinner table.
The man who had watched five lawyers try to force me into signing away my inheritance.
The man who had acted surprised when Aaron’s name was mentioned.
Now he was standing outside the farmhouse where my missing brother had been hiding for five years.
I slowly looked at Aaron.
“You knew?”
Aaron’s face was full of regret.
“I knew he would come.”
My heart sank.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I needed to know if I could trust you.”
The words hurt.
But I understood.
Everyone in this family had been lying for years.
Even Aaron.
Gregory walked toward the house.
Not rushed.
Not angry.
Calm.
That scared me more than anything.
Because people who are afraid make mistakes.
People who are confident usually know they have control.
A knock echoed through the farmhouse.
Three slow knocks.
Aaron whispered:
“He knows we’re here.”
I looked at him.
“How?”
Aaron didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked toward the door.
“Because he has always known.”
Before I could stop him, Aaron opened it.
Gregory stood there with his hands in his coat pockets.
He looked older than I remembered.
But his eyes were exactly the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
“Laura.”
He smiled slightly.
“I was wondering when you would finally find him.”
My stomach tightened.
“You knew?”
Gregory stepped inside.
“I knew you were smarter than your mother gave you credit for.”
Aaron moved between us.
“Don’t talk to her.”
Gregory looked at him.
After five years…
There was no surprise.
No anger.
Just disappointment.
“You still think you’re the victim.”
Aaron’s jaw tightened.
“You destroyed Dad.”
Gregory laughed quietly.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Your father destroyed himself trying to protect people who didn’t deserve it.”
I felt anger rising.
“You framed him.”
Gregory tilted his head.
“That’s a strong accusation.”
“Because it’s true.”
For the first time, his smile disappeared.
“Your father was a good man.”
The sentence shocked me.
Because I didn’t expect him to say it.
Gregory continued.
“But good men make terrible decisions.”
Aaron stepped forward.
“You manipulated him.”
Gregory sighed.
“Aaron, you still don’t understand.”
“Understand what?”
“That your father wasn’t protecting you.”
The room went silent.
Aaron froze.
“What?”
Gregory looked at me.
“He was protecting Laura.”
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?”
Gregory slowly walked toward the table.
“Your father discovered the truth five years ago.”
“About the money?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t he expose you?”
Gregory looked at Aaron.
“Because the evidence led somewhere worse.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Gregory reached into his jacket and placed a small envelope on the table.
“This.”
I looked at it.
My name was written on the front.
Again.
My father’s handwriting.
Another letter.
How many secrets had my father taken to his grave?
I opened it.
The first line made my hands shake.
“Laura, if Gregory ever finds you, it means the truth has finally reached the surface.”
I looked up.
Gregory’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
My father knew.
He knew this moment might happen.
I kept reading.
“Your mother did not act alone. But the person controlling everything is not who you think.”
I looked at Aaron.
Then Gregory.
Then back at the letter.
The next sentence made my blood run cold.
“The person who betrayed me was someone I trusted with my entire life.”
I stopped.
Because there was only one person left.
One person who had always been beside my father.
One person who knew every account.
Every decision.
Every weakness.
My hands started trembling.
“No…”
Aaron looked at me.
“What?”
I whispered:
“Mom.”
Gregory smiled.
But not happily.
More like someone watching a plan finally unfold.
“Now you understand.”
I looked at him.
“You’re saying my mother was behind everything?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I’m saying your mother was a part of it.”
My anger turned into confusion.
“Then who controlled her?”
Gregory didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Aaron.
“Tell her.”
Aaron looked away.
“Tell her what?”
“The reason you disappeared.”
Aaron became silent.
And that silence terrified me.
“Aaron?”
Finally, he spoke.
“The night before the trial…”
He swallowed.
“I found out Mom wasn’t just moving money.”
I waited.
“She was helping someone inside the government.”
My eyes widened.
“What?”
Aaron nodded.
“Dad found out too.”
The room became colder.
“Who?”
Aaron looked at Gregory.
Then at me.
“The person who had the power to erase evidence.”
I stared at Gregory.
But he shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the window.
“You still don’t see it.”
A strange sound came from outside.
Another vehicle.
Then another.
Aaron’s face changed.
“They’re here.”
I looked outside.
Several black vehicles surrounded the farmhouse.
My heart started racing.
“Who are they?”
Gregory walked toward the door.
And for the first time, I saw something unexpected.
He wasn’t confident.
He was scared.
“Laura…”
His voice lowered.
“You need to listen carefully.”
I looked at him.
“Why should I trust you?”
“Because the people outside are not here for Aaron.”
A pause.
“They’re here for you.”
The door shook.
Someone outside shouted:
“Open the door!”
Aaron grabbed my hand.
“We need another way out.”
I looked at Gregory.
The man I believed was my enemy.
The man who might have destroyed my family.
But now…
He looked like someone running from the same enemy.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
A voice I never expected.
My mother.
“Laura…”
Her voice was shaking.
“Whatever happens…”
A pause.
“Do not trust Gregory.”
I froze.
Because at that exact moment…
Gregory whispered:
“Whatever happens…”
He looked directly at me.
“Do not trust your mother.”
The two people who had lied to me my entire life were giving me opposite warnings.
And outside…
Someone was breaking down the door.
The truth was finally coming out.
But the question was…
Would I survive long enough to hear it?
