PART 3 — THE SECRET MY FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

The name Aaron hung in the air like a warning.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

It was as if the entire room had suddenly remembered a secret everyone had spent years trying to forget.

My half-brother.

The one person my father never stopped searching for.

The one person my mother refused to discuss.

I looked at her.

“Mom…”

She didn’t answer.

For the first time in my entire life, Evelyn Prescott looked like someone who had been caught.

Not accused.

Not questioned.

Caught.

Daniel noticed it too.

He quietly closed the folder in his hands.

“Laura, your father wanted you to know the truth. But he was afraid of what would happen if he revealed everything too soon.”

I looked at him.

“Afraid of what?”

Daniel glanced toward my mother.

“That depends on who you ask.”

My mother immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, this is unnecessary.”

“No, Evelyn.”

His voice was calm.

“But after tonight, it’s overdue.”

The confidence she had carried all evening disappeared.

“You have no right to reopen old wounds.”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Your husband had every right.”

The room became silent again.

I felt my heartbeat getting louder.

My entire life, I had believed I understood my family.

I believed my father was a successful businessman who made one terrible mistake.

I believed Aaron simply couldn’t handle the shame after the trial.

I believed my mother was just hurt and angry.

But now…

I wasn’t sure what was real anymore.

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me everything.”

He nodded slowly.

“Your father was convicted five years ago for diverting money from the farmers’ investment fund.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You know what the court was told.”

He opened another file.

“You don’t know what your father discovered before the investigation began.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did he discover?”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Missing financial records.”

My mother’s eyes shifted.

“Daniel.”

He ignored her.

“Accounts that had been altered. Transfers that didn’t match the official reports. And withdrawals made from accounts your father never personally approved.”

I stared at him.

“Are you saying my father was framed?”

Nobody answered immediately.

And somehow, that silence was an answer itself.

My father.

The man everyone called a criminal.

The man who lost his wife, his reputation, and five years of his life.

Maybe he wasn’t guilty.

Maybe he had been protecting someone.

I turned toward my mother.

“Did you know?”

Her lips parted.

But no words came out.

That was when I knew.

She knew something.

“Mom.”

My voice became colder.

“Did you know Dad was innocent?”

She looked away.

And that hurt more than if she had screamed.

Because silence is sometimes the loudest confession.

Gregory finally spoke.

“Laura, you don’t understand the situation.”

I looked at him.

“You’re right. I don’t.”

I stepped closer.

“So explain it.”

He avoided my eyes.

“You were young. You don’t know what happened inside that family.”

“I was thirty-four.”

“You were focused on your military career.”

“And you were focused on controlling my father’s money?”

His expression hardened.

“There it is. That attitude.”

I almost smiled.

Funny.

They always accused me of being difficult whenever I asked questions they didn’t want to answer.

Daniel placed another envelope on the table.

“This was found among your father’s personal belongings.”

My name was written again.

My father’s handwriting.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Aaron.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was someone else.

Someone I recognized.

My mother.

My hands went cold.

The picture was dated three days before Aaron disappeared.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why were you with him?”

Her face changed.

“Laura…”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“Don’t explain this away.”

I held up the photo.

“You told everyone Aaron ran because he was ashamed.”

I looked at the picture.

“But you saw him before he vanished.”

My mother sat down slowly.

The fight left her body.

For years, she had carried herself like someone who could control every situation.

But now?

She looked exhausted.

“I was trying to help him.”

The words barely came out.

“Help him?”

I stared.

“With what?”

She looked at Gregory.

And that small movement told me everything.

They were connected.

My stepfather.

My mother.

Aaron’s disappearance.

The inheritance.

All of it.

Daniel noticed.

“Laura, your father believed Aaron discovered something.”

“What?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“The truth about who was actually responsible for the missing money.”

The room went completely still.

I felt like the ground beneath me had shifted.

Because suddenly, the story everyone had told me began falling apart.

My father wasn’t the man who destroyed the family.

He might have been the only person trying to save it.

I looked at my mother.

“Where is Aaron?”

She closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I don’t know.”

I didn’t believe her.

Not completely.

Daniel reached into his briefcase and removed one final document.

“Your father left instructions.”

I looked at him.

“What instructions?”

He handed it to me.

“If anything happened to him, I was supposed to give you this after someone attempted to challenge the trust.”

I unfolded the paper.

Three words were written at the top.

FIND YOUR BROTHER.

Below that was an address.

A location in another state.

And beneath the address…

A warning.

“Trust no one in this house.”

My breathing stopped.

Because my father hadn’t written:

“Protect yourself.”

He hadn’t written:

“Fight for the money.”

He had written:

“Find Aaron.”

I looked up slowly.

My eyes moved from my mother…

To Gregory…

To Austin.

Someone in that room knew what happened.

Someone had been lying.

And before the night ended…

I was going to find out who.

Daniel picked up his coat.

“Laura, you should leave.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

His expression became serious.

“Because whoever wanted your father silenced…”

He paused.

“May realize tonight that you know the truth.”

A chill ran through me.

Then my phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

Only one sentence.

“Stop searching for Aaron… or you’ll end up like your father.”

I stared at the screen.

And for the first time that night…

I understood.

This was never about an inheritance.

It was about a secret someone was willing to destroy a family to protect.
