PART 4
Margaret spotted Olivia and Daniel standing outside the office building.
For a brief moment, she forced a smile.
"Olivia."
"I'm glad you're here."
"We should all sit down and talk."
Olivia didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at the folder still in Daniel's hands.
"Go ahead."
"Read page fourteen."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"Page fourteen."
With trembling fingers, he flipped through the report.
Each page contained copies of bank statements, transfer receipts, and transaction logs.
Then he reached page fourteen.
His breathing stopped.
The beneficiary's name appeared over and over again.
Margaret Carter.
Transfer after transfer.
Small amounts.
$1,500.
$2,000.
$3,800.
Never enough to attract attention.
But together...
More than $186,000 over the past eighteen months.
Daniel looked up in disbelief.
"...Mom?"
Margaret's smile froze.
"What is this nonsense?"
Olivia calmly spoke.
"As a forensic auditor, I notice patterns."
"Money doesn't disappear."
"It simply changes addresses."
Margaret folded her arms.
"Are you accusing me of stealing?"
"I'm presenting evidence."
Michael Chen stepped forward.
"We subpoenaed the bank records after discovering repeated unauthorized transfers from the joint account."
Margaret laughed.
"I had permission."
Daniel immediately turned toward her.
"You did?"
Margaret hesitated.
"I..."
"You said Olivia wouldn't mind."
Daniel's face slowly lost all color.
"You told me those transfers were gifts."
"You said Olivia agreed."
Margaret's eyes darted between them.
"I only wanted to help Emily."
Olivia quietly interrupted.
"No."
"You wanted control."

Everything suddenly began making sense.
The expensive baby furniture.
The renovations.
The daily deliveries.
Even the jewelry.
Not everything had gone to Emily.
Many purchases had been delivered elsewhere.
Another address.
Michael opened another file.
"We traced those deliveries."
He slid several photographs across the table.
A luxury apartment.
Designer handbags.
High-end furniture.
Receipts signed by...
Margaret Carter.
Emily stared at the photographs.
"Mom..."
"You told me your retirement savings paid for your apartment."
Margaret looked away.
"They did."
"No."
Olivia answered.
"My salary did."

Emily slowly sat down on a nearby bench.
She felt sick.
Over the past six years, she'd believed her mother had quietly sacrificed everything for her.
Instead...
Her mother had been taking money from Olivia all along.
Without permission.
Without gratitude.
Without guilt.
Emily whispered,
"Did you really do this?"
Margaret suddenly raised her voice.
"I did it for this family!"
"I raised both of you!"
"I deserved help!"
Olivia remained perfectly calm.
"Then you should have asked."
Silence.
Margaret's breathing became uneven.
"You make hundreds of thousands every year."
"You wouldn't even notice."
Olivia looked directly into her eyes.
"I noticed."
"I simply trusted my husband."
Daniel slowly covered his face.
Every excuse.
Every transfer.
Every time his mother said,
"Olivia already knows."
He had believed her.
Without asking his wife once.

That afternoon, the four of them met at the mediation office.
The mediator, an older woman with decades of experience, reviewed the documents quietly.
Then she looked at Daniel.
"Mr. Carter."
"Did your wife authorize these withdrawals?"
Daniel answered honestly.
"...No."
"Did you verify your mother's statements before allowing access to the accounts?"
"...No."
The mediator nodded slowly.
Then turned to Margaret.
"Mrs. Carter."
"Did you ever obtain written permission from Mrs. Bennett?"
Margaret remained silent.
The silence itself was the answer.
* * *
After nearly an hour...
The mediator finally closed the file.
"This is no longer simply a marital dispute."
She looked toward Michael.
"It may involve civil liability."
Margaret's hands began shaking.
For the first time...
She realized this wasn't another family argument.
This involved lawyers.
Courts.
Evidence.
Bank records.
Facts.
None of which could be silenced by saying,
"We're family."

Outside the mediation office, Emily caught up with Olivia.
"Wait."
Olivia stopped.
Emily stood there holding Sophie.
Her eyes were red from crying.
"I owe you an apology."
Olivia didn't speak.
"I thought you were being selfish."
Emily looked down at her sleeping daughter.
"I believed everything Mom and Daniel told me."
"I never asked what this cost you."
A long silence followed.
Finally Emily took a small envelope from her diaper bag.
"I found this while packing."
Olivia opened it.
Inside was a jewelry receipt.
A diamond necklace worth nearly $18,000.
Purchased using the joint account.
Emily shook her head.
"I never wanted it."
"I'm returning it."
"And I'll repay every dollar that was spent because of me."
Olivia studied her face.
For the first time...
She saw genuine regret.
"You don't owe me eighteen thousand dollars."
Emily looked confused.
"What?"
"You owe yourself a chance to stop letting your mother make every decision."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.

That evening...
Daniel entered the house alone.
The rooms echoed with silence.
Emily had packed her belongings and moved into a small rental apartment provided by her husband's employer.
Margaret had gone to stay with an old friend after receiving notice that a civil lawsuit was being prepared.
The once-crowded house now felt empty.
Daniel walked into the master bedroom.
The closet doors stood open.
Olivia's side was completely bare.
Only one thing remained.
A small handwritten note taped inside the wardrobe.
His hands trembled as he unfolded it.
It contained only one sentence.
"A marriage doesn't end when love disappears. It ends when respect does."
Daniel sank onto the bed.
For the first time in weeks...
He truly understood what he had lost.
But as tears filled his eyes, his phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
He answered weakly.
"Hello?"
A calm male voice replied.
"Mr. Carter?"
"This is Detective Harris."
"We need you to come to the Financial Crimes Unit tomorrow morning."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
There was a brief pause.
Then the detective said words that made his blood run cold.
"Because the investigation into your joint accounts has uncovered transactions that neither you nor Mrs. Bennett authorized."
"There may be... a third person involved."
